guitarsam326 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 (edited) Is there a gm or other 1/25 gas engine out there that has a block simular to a Detroit 6v53? Or are tje 53 and 71 blocks the same physical size?I want a block to start modifying from, any help would be greatly appreciated! Edited September 4, 2015 by guitarsam326
Chuck Most Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 None that I'm aware of. Anything in 1:25 would be way too small, and the webbing patterns/etc. wouldn't even be close, though I suppose that wouldn't be as much of a concern if you were just going to sand the block smooth and add your own detail anyway. I doubt there are even any 1:20 scale V-cylinder gas engines that would be close enough in size... not that there are an awful lot of those to begin with.If I needed a 6v53 what I'd do would be to cut down an 8v92/8v71 about 25% lengthwise and modify the heads, valve covers, exhaust manifolds and such to suit.
Aaronw Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 On Detroit Diesels the second number is the cubic inch displacement of a single cylinder, so a 6v53 is a 318, and a 6v71 a 426. The 71 series has a 4.25" bore and 5.0" stroke, the 53 series a 3.85" bore and 4.5" stroke. The 6v53 weights about 1500lbs, the 6v71 2000lbs, so I assume there is a noticeable difference in size between the two.The 92 series is just the 71 bored out, the 53 and 71 are of similar design but completely different engines.
guitarsam326 Posted September 5, 2015 Author Posted September 5, 2015 Thanks for the help fellas!Chuck- thats what i was gonna do, sand off the detail and add my own, so i may go that routeAaron- the bore and stroke isnt that much different between the two, thats why i was curious. I know a little about detroits, but the physical sizes, idk. 500 pounds doesnt seem that big of a difference to me though. Thanks again for the help, imma try to find one local and get some measurements.

I agree that there probably isn't a huge difference in size, but the difference between a Chevy 350 and a 454 is pretty noticeable in 1/25, I expect the same would be true in diesels of similar displacement.
guitarsam326 Posted September 5, 2015 Author Posted September 5, 2015 Aaron, ur probably right, i guess what i really need is some factory specs from a brochure or somethin, i guess i need to do some more diggin!
Aaronw Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 (edited) I just found this while nosing around, industrial versions rather than truck mounts but would certainly provide a good starting point.http://www.powerlinecomponents.com/literature/detroit_diesel/ddc_drawings.htm I think this may be a relatively new site as I've been looking for good drawings of the DD 8.2L for years and those are here as well. guitarsam326 Posted September 6, 2015 Author Posted September 6, 2015 (edited) Thats funny, i posted something on the aths forum on the 71 vs the 53 and someone pointed me to this very site and i was thrilled to see it, looks like a lot of good info! Im gonna have to look at the schematics on my desktop though, they arent very clear on my phone. Edited September 6, 2015 by guitarsam326
