philo426 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Recently started the wooden Model Shipways Harriet Lane solid hull wooden ship kit.Since the kit only provides for half paddle wheels,I decided to make them out of .80 dtyrene with mahogany paddles.I elected to motorize the paddle wheels with part of an A M T slot car chassis. Here is a pic.
philo426 Posted December 14, 2015 Author Posted December 14, 2015 Here is a clip of it running. 20151214_114608.mp4
Aaronw Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Neat, I've had my eye on that kit for sometime, but self control always gets the better of me. I like the transitional period between sail and steam power, some really interesting ships.
philo426 Posted December 15, 2015 Author Posted December 15, 2015 Yeah!Guy on FSM gave it to me for 14 bucks, which was the cost to ship it!How cool is thst guy?
Aaronw Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 So what is the point of powering the paddles? Do you intend to run it in the water or just want them to spin while it sits on the stand? That would be a neat R/C ship, something a little different chasing ducks around the pond.
philo426 Posted December 18, 2015 Author Posted December 18, 2015 I just thought it would be cool to run it on the stand.
philo426 Posted December 19, 2015 Author Posted December 19, 2015 Making the side wheel covers out of sheet styrene.Mocking it up to check for fit and details will be added later.
philo426 Posted December 27, 2015 Author Posted December 27, 2015 Work continues oon thevside wheel covers.I cut the slots andcdriled the holes out od .20 styrene and used cut down ammo cannisters from a Tabmiya 88 for then side louvers.
philo426 Posted December 31, 2015 Author Posted December 31, 2015 Masked and painted the black top sides.
philo426 Posted January 3, 2016 Author Posted January 3, 2016 Working out the display base prior to sanding and staining.
philo426 Posted January 4, 2016 Author Posted January 4, 2016 Installed the dolphin striker and painted and stained tge jibbom/bowsprit unit. Now I have to prepare tge white metal parts and drill out tge cannon barrelsĀ
philo426 Posted January 9, 2016 Author Posted January 9, 2016 Mounted up the sidewheel covers.I had to have the motor running when I mounted them up to ensure that they did not bind up.The aluminum tube braces help to stabilize them.
philo426 Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 Working on the side wheel covers and side decking.
