Superpeterbilt Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Hey guys, theres another new project in the works. I was itching to try out a few ideas that Ive had for awhile, and its going well so I decided to share it. I had been thinking about back-dating the Italeri Western Star using the AMT hood. As you all know these kits are two different scales, so that presents a small challenge. Basically I want to use the grill and cab from Italeri, and the hood from AMT and make a straight hood 1st generation Western Star. I started by sectioning the AMT hood, and widened and raised it. I added .160 in the width and .100 in height. The grill fits perfect and the hood fits the cab. I also cut out the hood for twin breathers. I drilled and pinned the U joints to make the drive shaft movable. I cut out the front hubs from some snap pete alcoa and added them to the Italeri alcoas.
Superpeterbilt Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 Im using AMT rear spokes with the Italeri 2piece tires
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 I'm liking this build! About what year model is this? I didn't realize that this hood and grill were used together.I was wanting to build a White Western Star with the 4000 White style hood, but never got around to it. Then I traded off my hood. It was just one of those projects that I would have probably never gotten to anyway.Great work so far, especially on the hood!!
JTRACING Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Great looking rig! Nice start , clean work!
Tesla Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Great project Terry and the hood looks to be a perfect fit. I like what you did with the U-joints.
Old Albion Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Excellent project and you are off too a great start.
bigred63 Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 What a great start on this model. I like what you have done so far, I will be following this build.

Maybe I should pay attention, but I was so distracted by the build.
Old Buckaroo Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 (edited) Great to see something coming from your bench. I thought for sure this was going to be "Clayton Davis's" truck. Nice work and the drive lines are insanely impressive ! I have been wanting to do a similar project but a WS coe Edited January 1, 2016 by Old Buckaroo I spell like a dolt somedays !
gatorincebu Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Terry, Cool project! Would you care to show exactly how you did the drive line mods? Would be appreciated. Be Well Gator
Superpeterbilt Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 Thanks a lot guys. Gator, I took a few close ups of the drive shaft. I drilled a .040 hole through one side of the U joint. Then I cut it apart like you would if you were making a front axle steerable. I cleaned up all cut surfaces with a small file, and slide a .040 styrene rod through the whole, and thats that. Granted, the U joint only moves in one direction, but thats all I need. This truck will have functioning walking beams, so everything needs to move freely.
Superpeterbilt Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 Small update for tonight. I got more cosmetic work done on the hood. I added the rib to the top of the fenders that AMT forgot. I also reshaped the protruded section on the hood sides. The rib is made from .040 half round. Here is the progress on the 1/24 Hendrickson. I used parts from the AMT Astro rear suspension, and the spring pack from the ALF ladder chief. This is the start of the walking beams. Western Star offered a 56" and a 60" spread on the Hendrickson RT650 suspension for this truck. Im going with the 60" spread.
gatorincebu Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Terry, Thanks for taking the time to show me the way you did the U joints. Much appreciated! And It was kinda as I expected. The hood is looking good. And I like you start on the suspension. I have not tried to build my own suspension as of yet. Be Well Gator
Old Buckaroo Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 That 60" spread will be nice ! I was wondering why you were making flexible drivelines..
Superpeterbilt Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 Thanks for the kind words guys. Here is the progress on the walking beams.
gatorincebu Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Terry, your walking beams look good. Oh and I like your tire choice. I am using those on my Pete Tridem build. Be Well Gator
Superpeterbilt Posted December 31, 2015 Author Posted December 31, 2015 Thanks Gator and Brian. Its the first time Ive attempted this. I have to give credit to Jarda for his functioning walking beams on the Pete 351 Logger he built. Ive seen it done before, but that build made me want to do it. Heres a wheelbase mockup. Rear tires have been sanded, and sidewalls have been scuffed with scotchbrite. The front tires will be changed for something that looks more like steer tires. Fuel tanks added.
Tesla Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Terry, The walking beams came out great! Mighty fine scratch building
Old Buckaroo Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Fantastic work , that is a long frame for you Terry I am really intrigued now .
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Nice Work!! This one is reminding me of an old Western Star that used to pull a flatbed here for a local lumber company. It had a similar wheelbase, and even had a solid back wall where the sleeper had been removed. Looking forward to seeing more!!
gatorincebu Posted January 1, 2016 Posted January 1, 2016 Terry ,you have things looking really good. As for the front tires. I would keep the ones you have on it now. kinda goes with the rear and a rougher looking truck. Be Well Gator
Superpeterbilt Posted January 1, 2016 Author Posted January 1, 2016 Terry, The walking beams came out great! Mighty fine scratch building Thanks Dennis. Im considering casting them for future 1/24 projects. Fantastic work , that is a long frame for you Terry I am really intrigued now . Thanks Sean. Im not sure if the frame will stay this long. I do like a long wheelbase daycab with a headache rack and tool boxes, so I may go that route. Nice Work!! This one is reminding me of an old Western Star that used to pull a flatbed here for a local lumber company. It had a similar wheelbase, and even had a solid back wall where the sleeper had been removed. Looking forward to seeing more!! Thanks Brian. I will end up cutting in a rear window. It was just easier to do it this way rather than patch the walk in sleeper hole. Terry ,you have things looking really good. As for the front tires. I would keep the ones you have on it now. kinda goes with the rear and a rougher looking truck. Be Well Gator Thanks Gator. If I cant find the tires I have in mind, I will leave these on.
