935k3 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) Anybody have good tips on what paints to replicate raw unpainted fiber glass as used in early Porsche race cars like the 935 and 917? I do airbrush so any good tips on mixes? See the fan and air shroud in pic below. Edited March 17, 2016 by 935k3
Snake45 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Model Master makes--or used to--a "Radome Tan" in the military line. Might be a good starting point, with maybe a little yellow added. That color shouldn't be TOO hard to approximate by mixing almost any kind of white, yellow, and tan. Good luck!
Crazy Ed Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 The Part # for Radome Tan is 4722. That's what I'm planning to use on my 917's.
935k3 Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) I mixed some TS Colors and came up with this. This has to be the toughest color to get right for me. Edited March 18, 2016 by 935k3
Crazy Ed Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 The biggest problem if one wants to "get it right" will require a clear gloss with random red'ish streaks to replicate the resin mix used for the 917's. But Dale, your blend sure looks good.
afx Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Looks good Dale. You might try some Tamiya "Smoke" over the color to give it a bit of sheen.
Snake45 Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Yeah, that's a pretty good mix. Also, if there's a model railroad shop in your area, take a look at Floquil paints, if they're still available. They have several colors in this neighborhood, such as "Depot Buff."
935k3 Posted March 19, 2016 Author Posted March 19, 2016 I changed to new mix. The original actually looked more pinkish orange in normal light. The new is Tamiya acrylics XF2 -white with some XF-4 green/yellow mixed in and some TS-79 s.g. gloss over all.
Crazy Ed Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Dale, to my eye I think the first one was closer.
