935k3 Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Actually it's the Porsche 935-78 that was nicknamed Moby Dick because of it's long tail section. This a an old motorized kit. I scratchbuilt most of the Roll cage and foot pedals. Paint is Krylon White. Wheels are a mixture of Tamiya bright red and flourescent red.Guages were drawn in Autocad and printed out. Rear window is tinted yellow to match real car.
george 53 Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Wow Dale thanks for the clarification,After readin tooslo or loslo or whatever ,I thought this might be a joke too!Ya know some nice builds can come out of some of those bare basic motorized kits. Yours looks pretty cool.Never knew they put those tails on regular Porsches.Looks like it'll come out pretty good.
RodneyBad Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Amazingly there are a few kits out there that get no respect because they had a motor. Body looked get tho. Yours is a stunning example. Body and all look great.
cruz Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Very nice Dale, I can vouch for you here in the forum for I had the pleasure of seing it over the weekend. Are you going to post the Mercedes? monkeyclaw Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Sweet! What scale is that 1/20? the body is very crisp....I am working on one in 1/12 scale right now...........it's a big project (no pun intended) Your car will be great when the artwork goes on...........matt

Well it wasn't exactly a regular Porsche, but a modified 935, which was basically a factory race car to begain wiht. It's official designation 935/78 for the one year it raced 1978. The fastest car at Le Mans at an absolute of 240 mph rivaling the 917.
3men2s Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Love how it is coming along, I have a Tamiya waiting for me, I have built two so far but not to my satisfaction. I need to do it right, this time it is an important piece in my collection. please if you can post how you put the decals, I will really appreaciate it...they are a bear. they are thick in one section and hair thin in others, I always end up doing the MOMO RED PORSCHE, but the car to built is the martini. This car is a beast, a great experiment and a great piece of history. you have to do it right, low and straight...i have found out the bodies I have worked with come warped..the car is long and wide. also the way it seats box stock is to high and it looks like a toy car which for modelers you want to avoid. will be watching and learning, thanks for sharing your work.

OR A REGULAR 935?..will like to see picks.....
monkeyclaw Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Both actually...I do mostly 935 K2, but also have a K3 in progress; and a Moby Dick body just underway as well; the Moby has been re-scaled and corrected from the fujimi R/C car....all of these are intended to use the Tamiya kits as a base...The K2 is correct nose section, rockers and 2Pc rear wing, the k3 is complete body; in a multi panel format ( so they will all come off), which I used the #70 {LM80}SACHS car for my research...as it was the 1st "customer" car for that year, done by Kremer. The moby has a way to go yet....but I have also done ALL of the correct twin turbo parts for these cars as well....turbos, piping; big honkin cooler, blow-offs etc. I have completed molds for the K2 stuff; but was really unhappy with the way the mold for the front clip "works"...and although it makes nice parts; I have to seperate the fenders and front apron and make another set of molds to make the parts for production; so they come out nice every time with far less effort. I plan to have another K2 and a K3 ready for the IPMS nats this summer............feel free to Pm me or email off board if you need any other info........matt monkeyclaw62@aol.com www.monkeyclawmodels.com
935k3 Posted April 13, 2008 Author Posted April 13, 2008 Moby Dick Porsche 935-78. Decals finished and Future and wax applied. Touch up and cleanup then add all the details. Not a decal job for the faint of heart.
Plasticfanatic Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 That is a sweet and beautiful 935!!! the decal job look superb and if is the model I am thinking of(I have one somewhere) you did a great job on the interior/rollcage to. Federico
