Nick F40 Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I have just finished my PSSAs in school, I know, THANK GOD! But today when I was doing my math section I came apon a question that had me puzzled. I told my teacher and he said he wasn't sure, he also couldn't give me the answer anyways, but he said he will ask. I hope you guys don't think this is a pointless post, I really am confused. Question: An airplane is flying at an average speed of 575 mph. It flew 2,570 miles and used 15,200 gallons of fuel. What is the approximation to the average number of gallons per hour? Answers" A. 80 B. 105 C. 300 D. 679
evilone Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 divide the amount of gas used by the amout the plain traveled that should give you the answer bro
Nick F40 Posted April 9, 2008 Author Posted April 9, 2008 Ok, that's 5.9 something, now do you see that answer?
Aaronw Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I believe you will find they forgot a zero in their answers. Distance / speed = 4.46 hours, 15200 gallons / 4.46 hours = 3400 gallons per hour (+/-). C is probably the correct answer assuming it should have been 3000. Makes you wonder how accurate the over all test is if they made a mistake like that? How many did you just not catch or will never know because they show the wrong answer being correct. The school should ask for its money back from the test writing company.
Olle F Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 (edited) 2,570 miles at 575 mph should take 2,570/575 = 4.47 hours. The fuel consumption per hour should be 15,200/4.47 = 3400 gal/h. Now I'm puzzled too... Edit: Seems like Aaron got the same number as I did... I guess something in the test isn't right. Edited April 9, 2008 by Olle F

That's what I thought, it is a weird thing. 2,570 miles at 575 mph should take 2,570/575 = 4.47 hours. The fuel consumption per hour should be 15,200/4.47 = 3400 gal/h. Now I'm puzzled too... Nick F40 Posted April 10, 2008 Author Posted April 10, 2008 Well, I did answer C, that's what they tell you. I hope that they just forgot to add a couple of 0's. I hate government controlled tests!

Oh, it's a government controlled test? Maybe they just want to see if you're a good citizen and answers "c" without questioning why.
notfastenuff Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 I don't know if they're trying to be the least bit realistic on this or not, but here's another thought. (remember, I don't know jack about how fast planes fly) A gallon a fuel weighs app. 6 pounds. 15200 gallons of fuel would come out to 91200 lbs. of fuel. That seems like an astronomical amount of weight. I'm wondering if they got carried away with the 0s, and it's supposed to be 1500 gallons. With that line of thinking, the approximate answer becomes C: 300. Just a thought.

Mal.au Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Hi Guys Just call my 12 year old in to have a look as they are doing some problem solving in math at school He took one look at it and said it can't be any of those answers it would have to be a 4 digit answer, with those figures he is right, I think the extra zero is in the fuel capacity Mal
Nick F40 Posted April 13, 2008 Author Posted April 13, 2008 Mal, thanks for your son confirming that, I apreciate it. Like I said, I was confuzzled, I figured it was C, that it was a 0 missing. The lbs does seem wrong.
Aaronw Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 A 747 can carry a fuel load of 48,000 to 64,000 gallons of fuel (varies depending on which version of 747). The 747 has a cruising speed of 555 to 570 miles per hour, so is realistically a contender for the aircraft in the question. A proposed 747 firefighting air tanker was developed that can carry 24,000 gallons of retardant (at 12 lbs per gallon), the DC10 air tanker in limited use carries 12,000 gallons of retardant. It's possible that the fuel consumption, had an extra zero but it could just as easily be the answer is missing one. Regardless I'd say there is a zero goofing off.
