George Bojaciuk Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) Quick note to Greg: Been in the shop....get your checkbook ready! Just wanted to share..... I'm currently restoring a Corgi Green Hornet Black Beauty. The grille was badly marred and I really didn't want to send it out to be rechromed. Not sure it would have taken to the process, well. Since this is an ancient piece, I was looking at more friendly procedures. Some of you may know that I have worked at Eastwood. Yes, the restoration supply place. While there, I had the chance to use their liquid chrome process. Basically, it is Alcad. I masked off a valve cover, which was already painted black. The initial coverage was supposed to be light and I used my own airbrush. It went on nice and really popped. After the recommended drying time, I went back and put on the clear....it dulled immediately. Problem I've had with most metallizers. I even tried their 2K urethane which made it look more like steel. Obviously, I never recommended or encouraged the product. After a few days, I noted that the surface was cracking like an old lacquer paint job! Now to the problem at hand...my grille! I get tons of product emails and one announced a new chrome paint. Duplicolor Chrome, #CS101. So off to Autozone I go....I find it, not expensive. I read the destructions and see it needs a little prep. Using Eastwood's Pre, I cleaned the part and made sure that there was no crud in the grille horizontals. So....I warm up the can (warm water, no stove, please!), shake it up well and give it a squirt! Part was not primed, not base coated black...just painted over the existing finish. Here's what I got.... ...It dried shiney...not dull. The pic below is after a few hours. I touched it and it is durable. Quite frankly...I'm sold! I do plan on trying a black base and I'll play with some clears....I'll keep you all posted. Edited May 19, 2016 by George Bojaciuk
crazyrichard Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 i saw a can of this from a nother brand here in holland also has the real chrome look on the can .. i have to be hounest ..i wanted to try that .. still didnt buy it though .. but i was very oooohhh like whe i saw the pic of the can you posted .. really curious on how this looks... tbh i expected it to look like the cap of the can > real chrome and more like the kit chrome ?? what i see on your picture looks good but it not that CHROME finish i hoped to see , its about the same i get with a certain silver metallic can i now use from a local diy brand in holland ... here are some examples of what i use now > rattle can similair to the alcad look engine parts center of the steering wheel rollcage i build looks like chrome ... untill you see kitchrome next to it .. then it uddenly looks more silver ... so that why i hoped it would look like the kit chrome ...
George Bojaciuk Posted May 19, 2016 Author Posted May 19, 2016 Only Chrome looks like chrome.I have seen something from Australia that is the closest to chrome, but is made of silver. Very expensive.I posted this as a DURABLE substitute to Alcad.
cook_dw Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Nice job.. I have used this before and IIRC using a gloss black base makes it shine more.. Regardless looks good to me.
RestoModGuy Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 That paint works real nice, but not real chrome finish as the cap indicates. This paint will not accept any clear coats, it will instantly dull to silver paint finish.Try not to handle the part with fingers the oils will also dull it.
djmcguire Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Try not to handle the part with fingers the oils will also dull it. Exactly what I found to be the case when I tried it too...I was looking for a polished aluminum look and the part looked great until I touched it to actually put it on the motor. I definitely wouldn't try to clearcoat over it though.
crazyrichard Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 the stuff i showed , same story , clear coat dulls it .. it takes a long time drying before you can handle it with pressure .. then dont toutch to often or it dulls ..but i mean who knows how kit chrome is done in the factory ?? what process they use ...it has to be possible to get the ssame chrome look like kit chrome ???

I like this one!!! sometimes the kit chrome may be too 'chrome', especailly the old tamiya kits
