crazyrichard Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 i started on a small dio for my abandoned 69 charger i just build .. build thread is here > i started with superthin mfd wood as a base and glued on some cork plate this way > then i went outside and collected real dirt from my backyard , aplyed this to the cork and mdf with woodglue , real mey load of woodglue and smearing on the dirt by hand .. a bit like in the childhood days .. playing with matchbox or tonka cars in dirt i knew thi works because i tried thi on my gasstation dio with a mall strip of dirt on the side and real materialss beat faking it .. the glue dryes ad leave no marks , nothing beats real dirt to replicate dirt right ? now on the pic it was just aplied i did the corc to beble to create puddles .. i want to make real watery puddles later , a small piece of fence with barb wire , going t make my own barb wire and rust it .. also some mud will be covered with dead vegetation .. i'm not going to buy anything for this so i will have to be creative .. i still have some moss like stuff and i have some dead mo in the garden i want to use idea for a dead tree .. also scavenged out of the garden ... now i have a abandoned dodge van .. i wanted to put them both on the base .. but it looked to staged ,, its quite a bit van and not a lot of room .. so the idea is when this is done to make a same size base plate for the van and put maybe a car shell beside that and that way i can build several base like this in the future and put them all together to make like a junkyard or foresty terrain with abandoned vehicles .. and still be able to put it in the cubbord .. on thi one i might do a small wonky shed ?? some loose parts here and there .. we will see no set plan
crazyrichard Posted May 23, 2016 Author Posted May 23, 2016 it dry and matte now .. some cracks occured during drying , but thats looks great .. perfect base to build on now
crazyrichard Posted May 24, 2016 Author Posted May 24, 2016 thnx guys ! its harder with smaller surface i'm used to ake bigger dioramas put up the base for the tree ..and glued a extra lim to it ... and a nother lim , just used superglue to glue them on and that is now rok solid some smaller side branches later with a busted fence behind it and some barb wire on poles , some puddles (wet) and some misc. stuff i think it will come to life more
crazyrichard Posted May 24, 2016 Author Posted May 24, 2016 just added a li to the tree , then changed the tyre for a scuffed up white wall .. looks better and the wite in the puddle i a test with krytal clear .. curious if that will look like water ! i did not research trees .. i ussed the wood i found ...i just googled dead tree and found this > how cool
GTJUNIOR Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Looks very convincing Richard. Check out the model railroad forums, they have a resin that they use for creating water effects.
crazyrichard Posted May 25, 2016 Author Posted May 25, 2016 thnx tony ! yes i know resin works but i want to try micro crystal clear .. dont really want to order resin especially .. that said i think it came out really cool > i just did the rest of the deeper parts , looks weird now all white will be clear tomorrow if all go well overal shots .. needs a lot of detail still
crazyrichard Posted May 26, 2016 Author Posted May 26, 2016 starting to come together .. the puddles i filled yesterday are not turned clear completly .. i think they will be all clear tomorrow ... alsmost there started making barb wire on poles today ...turned thin steel wire in the drill , drilled holed in wooden sticks .. placed the poles with one broken one .. the fed the wire through and gave it all a first wash ... now to make it look like barb wire i will add separate pieces of wire wrapped around the steel wire banding 2 points outside ... also i will add soe loose wire on the ground where the pole is broken
JTalmage Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Looks great! I always wanted to do an outdoor dio when I was younger, never got around to it. Also a shop dio like yours that you build. Great work as usual.I noticed on thing the car should have... a dark stain from the gas cap where fuel had been spilled over the years.
crazyrichard Posted May 26, 2016 Author Posted May 26, 2016 thnx jesse ! and yes its so much fun and yes i could do dark haze around that gascap earea ... will try some
Badluck 13 Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Richard you have some awesome talent on your dio's and work,so realistic....you must be having a blast when you do these creations.
crazyrichard Posted May 27, 2016 Author Posted May 27, 2016 thnx mike .. and yes i do .. so much fun .. i never make a plan , i just sit and build and try all sorts of materials ... i did learn that when you can use the real deal material wise its always better then trying to make someting look like it ..
crazyrichard Posted May 27, 2016 Author Posted May 27, 2016 just finished the first section of the barbed wire .. added the spikes , i have choosen a simple version from all the types i saw on google
crazyrichard Posted May 27, 2016 Author Posted May 27, 2016 (edited) started to add some misc. parts , i will add some small stuff with color later and jesse if you look at the pics i did your idea of a black haze around the gass cap Edited May 27, 2016 by crazyrichard
72 Charger Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 I like what your doing Richard . One little thing though A dead tree would not drop leaves.......?
Xingu Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 (edited) Leaves can blow in from the diorama next door Excellent work Richard. Edited May 28, 2016 by Xingu Public School Spelling
crazyrichard Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 thnx guys ! and yes the leaves are not ment to come from the dead tree ..i figured just outside the dio are trees that have lost their leaves ..i saw lot of abandoned car and junkyard pictures where i noticed leves collecting on and around cars with no tree directly beside it ..i have thought about making smaller branches on the tree and gluing brown leaves on it .. but i think that would not come out that great and the wood i found looks exacty like dead trees
crazyrichard Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 (edited) added 2 signs i made a while back .. to add some color and see how that turned out , next week i will buy a new printer .. this one broke down .. so i had to use these for now .. old for sale sign oil sign , maybe change this for a more vintage serious oil sign later i found a 1/25 sink in a small bag in a modelstore a while back .. and bought that .. now i weathered it with some green and put a waterstop in it .. then a ford hubcap and a test to make cheap water .. did a small layer of superglue and then filled it with velpon glue , real cheap clear glue , untill now it still clear and not sinking in .. could be a cheap way to create water in stuff ... that crystal clear i used on the puddles is expensive , small bottle and wont apply in one thick layer Edited May 28, 2016 by crazyrichard
crazyrichard Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 changed some stuff , removed the oil sign .. and barb wire and went for a wood fence , gave it a first wash
crazyrichard Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 so i gave all the puddles a wash with green , that reall worked well .. looks great , also added a muffler with drilled open pipe .. i cracked the pipe a bit so it looks busted on te right i will continue the fence .. if i would have placed the charger more in the front i could have build a shed ... maybe i can build a small shed on the right upper corner and run the fence onto that...
Yahshu Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 That is so cool. Thanks for the cool ideas for my Mad Max Dio
crazyrichard Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 (edited) so i bought some gras at the train department ... loose stuff in a bag ...it looked yellow in the store , especially next to the real green gras .. but when i applyed it on the ground it looked to green and alive .. it looked horrible ... so i took some light yellow rust color pigment powder , its almost yellow and started to brush the gras .. man it went from alive to dead grass in a instant .. after some finetuning i got the result on the pics .. worked better for the look and feel .. it also went a tad more matt (the gras) also added 2 ribbed rusted panels , 2 sides of a truck bed behind the tree and a old lantern in front of the tree Edited June 4, 2016 by crazyrichard
Tommy Isbister Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Great job on the dio. All the small details really make it pop.
