wisco8 Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 I hope I'm doing this right. I have already stripped this car twice both times failed. I primed with Tamiya fine white, first a light coat then with a little heavier coat, wet sanded cleaned and dried. I painted the body with Scale finishes Red bull blue which has a very fine metallic in it. I didn't want to do any wet sanding in fear of making the same mistake by getting blotches,so I just used a paper towel to knock down the surface texture, the paint lays down flat when sprayed. The next step I used Tamiya TS-13 gloss out of the can by spraying a few light mist coats real fast back and forth, and then let it dry for a few hours. Then I sprayed a 3 more heavier coats and let it dry overnight. I wet sanded any dust particles as you can see in the pics extremely careful with 1000 grit automotive wet/dry sandpaper. After doing all of this I still have orange peal in the clear coat. Will this go away after 3-4 more heavier coats of the clear? Thanks, Steve C.
MrObsessive Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 If this were I, I wouldn't add anymore clearcoats to the paint, but rub out what's already there. I don't know if you have these, but polishing cloths work wonders in getting rid of any orange peel. The grits run from 3200-12,000. After you've rubbed out the clear, you'd then polish out the clear with some type of wax. My wax of choice (been using it for years) is Meguiar's Car Cleaner Wax. It's a very mild abrasive (somewhat liquid), and would work over the type of paint you're using. From what I can see here, the clear is not bad at all, so there shouldn't be much trouble rubbing out the little orange peel that's there.Hope this helps!
moparfarmer Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Obsessive is right..I use Meguiar's Cleaner and its great..I have recently used Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 and found it is real good too..I then finish with Meguiar's Gold Class paste(not too heavy on the rag)..Also use flannel and not an old t-shirt..Flannel is softer..Use it to apply and polish..You will see great results..Mr.Obsessive knows what he it talking, about and is one of the foremost model builders in the USA...
wisco8 Posted August 27, 2016 Author Posted August 27, 2016 Hi Bill, thank you for responding. I do have a few sets of micromesh. I figured that would be what I would have to do. I worked on the body yesterday for 14 hours straight polishing and waxing wet sanding and re polishing. Looks like I'm going to have to do it again. Thank you Bill. I will re post in a day or two. Steve C.
MrObsessive Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Why thanks Wayne! Flannel is nice..........here's what I use as I think it's about as soft as soft can get. Chamois cloth. It's mostly pure cow's skin and well, skin is about as soft as it gets! Unless you've got really, dry super chapped skin!

Steve C. I know what you mean! Polishing bodies out IMO is one of the most important things IMO in model building as it's the first thing that people will see when they come upon your model. This '49 Mercury that I built years ago, I know took more than a week to rub out and polish working two hours at a time. Just like a real car, you have to do one body section/panel at a time. The roof alone can take a couple hours or more till you get it right.

I gave my X2.0 away a few years ago. I didn't think I would need it for anything after polishing my the headlight lenses. Well its off the the auto store to get some more. Take care Wayne, Steve C.
