You can, or a block of styrofoam as I used to prior to making this but seeing some for sale I thought, that's a neat idea and I could build one of those easily, it's nice and portable from desk to drying box which plasticine isn't and weighted enough that it won't easily tip like styrofoam if you have some heavy large pieces pinned to it, I've had to strip and repaint parts due to that. When all's said and done, it's another alternative but best of all it's free to make.

I personally use some plastic tubs I bought from Officeworks and a piece of 20mm wooden board cut to size. I drilled holes every 20mm. Advantage of this is that there is no dust captured (as the wood is smooth) and the wood is easy to place/remove from the tubs. Perfect for painting/dust.
