Hi, I have previously painted my acrylic black over a clear coat (zero 1k), only to find that it doesn't adhere too well. Meaning that it doesn't take much to scrape off by accident.

So I was considering roughing the surface with sand paper first.

Any advice out there? What did you guys do? Cheers

Are you first painting the body with Clear and then the Black color coat ? Are you using the Clear coat as a Primer ?  Usually the body would be prepped and then primer applied. The primer would receive a very light sanding usually in the 1000 plus range. Then the color coat followed by the Clear Coat.

Honestly, I would be very careful about scuffing the area where you're going to paint the trim. It might help to improve the adhesion though. If you decide to go this route I would carefully mask the paint around the trim to avoid damaging the finish.  Are you brushing or airbrushing the black trim? If airbrushing, you might be better off decanting and spraying Tamiya TS29 semi-gloss black lacquer. It looks really good and wears like iron.  I've found that the Tamiya acrylics are more prone to wearing off than the Testors Model Master acrylics, so you might want to try Testors if you need to use acrylics.

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time, a few answers to your questions:

The body has been primed with zero grey, then a few coats of Tamiya aerosol silver, then bmw touch up paint applied by airbrush. Then several coats of 1k clear, not polished.

Now I want to add black plastic trim details, and always struggle with adhesion of the Tamiya acrylic over a glossy finish.

I cannot get testors acrylic here in the UK, but I may try the Tamiya spray option. I know that one can decent, I've never tried it myself...

Thanks for the help!

I guess I misunderstood just what you were trying to accomplish. If you're trying for a flat or semi gloss finish, for example the area between the tail lights on say a '67 thru '69 Camaro, I would try Tamiya products using a brush or spray with a lot of masking of the surrounding area. I'm have not used 1k clear so it maybe that a very light sanding of the area may be needed so that what ever paint you use can get some "bite" for adhesion.
