NYLIBUD Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 (edited) Saw this depressing picture on FB.Its a bunch of cars being stored at Englishtown raceway, getting ready to be auctioned off..Here on LI,there is a group of people who are trying to get a drag strip built again on LI.However, the odds are against it unfortunately.#1,the land is too valuable.Too many neighbors saying, not in my back yard. The track wouldn't be racing any sort of top fuel or funny car. That noise would wake the dead.It would be just a bunch of street car guys..Anyway,there's so much red tape involved, but they keep on trying to get it done.Heres to everybody from "LINADS"..Long Island needs a Drag Strip..Good luck. RogerCP Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 Sad,,, I actually raced there, '68 Springnationals. Good times.
peter31a Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 I'm sure all the NIMBY'S (Not In My Back Yard) don't want a dragstrip. They also don't want street racing either. They can't get it through their minds that one helps alleviate the other.
Mike C Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 Well, when I lived on LI there used to be NY National Speedway in Center Moriches. I know since I've been gone there was a Long Island Dragway built. Is that gone too now? And now NJ has lost Englishtown? That sucks too. I'm sure glad I don't live there anymore.

LI drag way is in the history books.I think they closed that track down like 15 years ago.So for LI drag racers, the closest track was E Town,But again, now it's a parking lot.Theres always Maple grove, and Atco, but there a couple of hours away.so now this group of guys, and gals are trying to get a new track built. But as I said,it's a long shot, and it wouldn't be up and running for several years.Eastern LI is prime NY real estate. It just sucks.
