Mopar - D Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Ken nice progress and thanks for sharing the issues with this kit and how to fix them. I’m going to order one of those front axles.
Ken Gilkeson Posted November 17, 2018 Author Posted November 17, 2018 no problem Dan. the radiator supports are too high making the hood run uphill to the grille as seen in the profile picture. so I trimmed them off lowering the radiator shroud, also had to trim the bottom of the radiator and grill to get everything level. now everything lines up except the right fender joint. fenders about ready for paint.
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted November 18, 2018 Posted November 18, 2018 Nice progress Ken! I had a similar problem with the right filler on the U model that I'm building. I finally sanded off the MPC factory tabs and lined it up with the fender. Even though the fender of the hood hides it on the U it was causing hood alignment problems for me. Anyway I hope that I got it fixed. Looks Great!!
Ken Gilkeson Posted November 18, 2018 Author Posted November 18, 2018 Thanks Brian, got some paint on the body and interior.
Ken Gilkeson Posted November 20, 2018 Author Posted November 20, 2018 had a good day. got the window glass put in, installed the interior, mounted the cab and hooked up the intake piping and steering linkage. blinged the door handles, painted the heat shield.
drinkone2 Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 This is looking real good Ken! I came across a DM800 build on another forum and the builder cut the plastic tube connecting the fenders down the middle. He then sleeved a piece of thin aluminum tube over the 2 halves before attaching them to the frame, allowing the fenders to swing up independently of each other which I thought was a good idea. Just trying to gather info on all of the corrections and modifications I will need to do before I start building mine.
Ken Gilkeson Posted November 20, 2018 Author Posted November 20, 2018 that's a great idea Jim as the grill is wider than the fender opening. I did get the air cleaner mounted and trimmed the roof with painted lights and horns. the decals are from the chevy crew chief kit.
Ken Gilkeson Posted November 22, 2018 Author Posted November 22, 2018 the front fenders, radiator, brace and hoses were added. a black sharpie was used to outline front and rear glass.
Ken Gilkeson Posted November 22, 2018 Author Posted November 22, 2018 license plates will finish the rear of the cab.
Mopar - D Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Getting closer Ken and just keeps getting better. Looking forward to seeing the finish.
Ken Gilkeson Posted November 23, 2018 Author Posted November 23, 2018 Thanks Dan, I got the hood and grill lined up and mounted. I forgot to mention I ground the tabs off the frame that the interior tub is designed to sit on. the cab is sitting on the front and rear cab mounts, the tabs raised the cab throwing the fender alignment off.
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 Looks like you knocked this one out of the park Ken, but I thought it was going to be a Winter project.
Joe Thomas Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Hi Ken, great build. Working on my 2nd one now. First was built in 1973, still have it along with the gravel trailer. One observation. If you look at the center bottom of the dash you will see a small cutout, that is the location for the heater box as opposed to the floor in front of the passenger seat. The box is glued to the front interior wall and the bottom of the dash.
