After some fiddling, it begins like this. Slightly chopped hollywood top with a 37 Ford split rear window (I know it doesn't look like a VW split window, it was never my point either as this is a custom build after all), 36 Ford grille and bonnet, older US spec bumpers and Astro Supremes....

I remember seeing Volkswagens in the late 60's early 70's with conversion kits like this on them. A few examples.

I tried some different headlights. 1936 Ford pods was out of the question, it made the car look like Mickey Mouse. Stock VW headlights a bit too modern since this is a 1968 with the new style front fenders. 40 Ford looked good except from the side where the thick trim rings was standing out too much. 1937 Ford was actually the best choice even though that was the least expected one for me.

Since the front now is a perfect place for a radiator, I am going to run a Buick V6 in this one.

I don't care too much if I have to lengthen the rear lid, since I am going to mount the spare in the back anyway, so it will only become a natural console for mounting it. But of course, I'm even happier if I don't have to touch it.
