Allen Wrench Posted April 26, 2019 Posted April 26, 2019 (edited) Does anyone have a good method for adding the thin red or yellow stripes to the edges of modern NASCAR wheels? If so, how about sharing? Thanks. Edited April 26, 2019 by Allen Wrench More info added
restoman Posted April 26, 2019 Posted April 26, 2019 I've used some shiny card stock and brushed on colour, then simply placed the wheel face down to transfer the paint from the card to the wheel. A little bit of practice and you get nice even paint edges, though it's only on the outside edge of the rim.
Belugawrx Posted April 26, 2019 Posted April 26, 2019 I have accomplished this by thinning down the stripe colour and running a pin wash around the recessed ring... A couple of coats and the colour strengthens... Good luck
Russell C Posted April 27, 2019 Posted April 27, 2019 For my 1/32 scale Kyle Petty wagon, I lathe-cut a groove in the wheel rim and glued in (via liquid cement) a length of heat-stretched red plastic sprue. But liquid solvent glue can melt that kind of thin sprue if you put a hair too much down, so an alternative is super glue. A person would have to experiment for a while with this technique, but it is a way to get consistent color and stripe width all the way around. Looks like after a couple of decades, the top center-right section of my 'stripe' has started to lift out of the groove just a tad.
Jim N Posted April 29, 2019 Posted April 29, 2019 I start with a white wheel. If it is molded in white plastic, that is where I start. If it is molded in another color, I paint it flat white. Then I paint the wheel with a flat black enamel. When the wheel is fully dry, I take an X-acto knife and using a very shallow angle, I scrape the black paint off until I get to the white. This takes some practice and don't scrape more than an 1/8" at a time. When the wheel is done, I use a red or yellow marker and color the stripe. I then use a semi - gloss clear and detail the wheel.
