itsadaytona Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Im building a 70 Challenger and its comming out really good until I got to painting the window trim. I cant seem to keep the paint on just the trim and not get it up on the roof. I guess my hand just isnt steady enough. Any tips on how to do this? Thanks
diymirage Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 as far as painting goes it really is a matter of trail and error/practice makes perfect i'll admit certain models are easyer to paint then others because the trim is more pronounced but in the end you just have to practice at it try finding something you can rest your hand on while you paint to keep it more steady. if all else fails you can mask the of the car and then paint the trim and im sure someone will come by and talk to you about bare metal foil
crispy Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Here's a tutorial I bookmarked from another message board. It'll work for chrome trim too I suppose. However, If you are doing chrome trim have you tried anything similar to bare metal foil? Link: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t93656.html Chris
randx0 Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 there are alot of different ways to paint the chrome trim sometimes you will use more than one on the same model.the best way to replicate chrome trim is probably bare metal foil.since you're specifically asking about painting I'll focus on that. the easiest is probably using a paint marker or silver sharpie if you have problems keeping your hand still try resting it on something to help keep it still .using a mild tack tape to mask off the roof is a good idea too just remember that the tape is in case of an accident and not a failsafe you should still try not to get paint on the tape. practice practice practice not alot of people can freehand chrome trim . so good luck I hope this helps point you in the right direction.
itsadaytona Posted October 26, 2008 Author Posted October 26, 2008 Thanks guys! This has been a lot of help. I havent done models in a long time so im just getting into it again. I thought about masking, but I used masking tape to make a vinyl top on it and thought putting tape over that would just take the paint of the top. Since this was my first build in a while I figured it wasnt going to be that nice so I was willing to try new things and see how it turns out. Once I figure out how to shrink my pictures I will post them for you all to see. Thanks for all your help!
VictorSmalls Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Thanks a lot for the link. I also have a project that I will be needing some black trim. Welcome back to the hobby. This is a great place to gather some tips and information on this hobby. I look forward to seeing some pictures of your progress.
billd64 Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 wow, after reading your posts, id like to get a copy of that tutorial, but id also like to suggest that you look into bare metal foil. I looked into it years ago, and found BMF, a "brand new #11" blade, and some q-tips can do a great job of trim vs. spilling paint or errors that ruin paint. you just need a light touch with the blade so as to not ruin foil or underneath paint as you will be peeling of the rest of the foil, it does a great job. I had a few problems wth the black versionof BMF, but over time they got the formula right like they did the chrome. it can also be used to seperate two tone / multi color paint jobs with little to no ridge when you pull it off, and the small ridge that is there can be buffed out quick with a polishing kit. You can also wax the model after foil applied, and you can clearcoat over the foila s well good luck billd itsadaytona said: Im building a 70 Challenger and its comming out really good until I got to painting the window trim.
