Screws to hold chassis to body on Action NASCAR die casts

Looking for some screws that hold the chassis to the body on 1/24 scale NASCAR die cast cars. They are  either Action or Lionel or Team Caliber. Over the years I have picked up some used cars on Ebay, etc and lots of times they are missing a screw so I am trying to dig up around 6 of them. I went to my Ace Hardware and the smallest they have is 4-40 so I need the next size down whatever that is. They are 1/4" long. Any ideas. I wrote to Lionel and they are out of the office till the end of August.

Are those regular machine screws or self-tapping, or sheet-metal type screws?

My hardware store has screws down to 0-80 size.  I have some down to 0000-160 size.

In your case the next size would probably be 2-56.  Those should be available in hobby shops.  Are you sure those screws aren't metric?  Usually Chinese-made products use metric sizes.
