I recently purchased a 50 Olds coupe model to get the early v8 engine for another project. The engine was correct as a 303 configuration but the kit contained some finned, chromed valve covers rather than the original style ribbed ones although one illustration in the instructions showed the original style. I'm wondering if the original style was ever offered and if not is there another source. I'd try to modify ones that I have but the ribbed style is difficult to duplicate especially with the separate plug wire loom strip that bolted on top. Is there another kit that has the originals?

The kit should include both the stock valve covers and the fined aluminum covers you mention. The stock intake, carb., and air cleaner should be there as well. What may make them difficult to identify is their unique shape. The stock covers have an additional cover molded into them that runs the length of the valve cover. This represents the method that Oldsmobile used to guide the spark plug wires over the top of the valve covers. Look closely on the decal sheet and you will find two small "Oldsmobile" decals in red that would go on the top of that cover.

Aha, that's the reason. I have the custom version. Many thanks for the info. The originals were not included in the one I got.
