Gonna use this paint on my next project (AMT 1962 Thunderbird Convertible) and I had some questions. I'm a noob when it comes to super-nice exterior finishes...have done rattle can stuff before and I'm never happy with the result. I recently bought an airbrush and am getting better with it.

1) Should I use primer? Bodyshell is molded in white plastic.

2) Do I need to use a base coat here of silver or something? I want the paint to really pop!!

3) Is this Mr. Hobby paint acrylic or lacquer or enamel?

I plan on getting Mr. Hobby Super Clear for the final coats, and will wet sand and polish.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Mr hobby is lacquer and is great to use.

My airbrush is used mostly for aircraft. For model cars I use duplicolor spray cans for primer, paint and 1k clear (Wet sand if needed but usually great results just from spray can ). Also sometimes tamiya spray paint for car bodies and rustoleum flat black for chassis.

Though primer isnt required I do use duplicolor primer gray and white colors of depending color choice. Of course gray for dark colors, white for light colors to really pop. Try using duplicolor spray can primer, paint and 1k clear you will have great results.

You should primer because Mr. Hobby is a lacquer and  especially gray to check for anything body related that you may of missed from clean up.  I don't know have that color so I'm not sure if it's a light or dark green, but the basecoat color of the primer will affect the shade of the color coat.  White primer will make the green brighter and pop more so than a gray or black primer those will just make the green darker.  Can't speak on there clear coat stuff, but there primer and paint are fantastic stuff.

Just to reinforce the previous comments.

yes it’s a lacquer paint.

Mr Hobby 1500 series primers are fantastic and what I use. Try black, grey and white on a test object and I would also test a silver base coat.

Mr Hobby super clear 3 is also fantastic and gets a wet look. Combine all of these with their Mr Leveling thinner and use thin coats for a great result.

This was painted with only Mr Hobby products and my airbrush.

Thanks for all the great replies, guys. The color is a rich metallic Emerald green, so I guess I'll start with a medium grey primer. Excellent advice to experiment with a base silver coat and possibly different primer colors. Still waiting on the kit in the mail, and I'll no doubt start with the engine first (I'll use my Tamiya acrylics here), so I've got plenty of time to noodle this around.

Dale, that stuff seems great. Nothing but positive reviews, so I ordered some. I also went with Tamiya Fine Surface Primer and Mr. Hobby Super Clear Coat.

As primer is in a spray can and fumes are said to be super nasty, I'll definitely do this part in the side yard with a respirator and lots of fresh air.

Yeah Mr hobby leveling thinner is amazing.  I got 2 big bottles of it lol last a long time.  There rapid thinner is good too its for flats, and metallic paints.
