1972coronet Posted July 22, 2022 Posted July 22, 2022 I've been watching Mr. Lin (see link) builds on YouTube, and am impressed with his skills and builds. One thing I've noticed is the paint he uses (in some builds) for the brightwork Mr. Hobby Mr. Color Lacquer C104 Metallic Gloss Gun Chrome C104 10ml – Burbank's House of Hobbies Has anyone here used this paint? If so, how do you apply it (airbrush or paint brush)? I don't have an airbrush, so that's not really an option for me. I do have a Prevail, but haven't used it yet. Opinions and examples of your work would be appreciated. Thanks. Trim painting starts at ~ 10:20 marque.
Oldcarfan27 Posted July 22, 2022 Posted July 22, 2022 To me it just looks like regular silver. I guess it would hold up to handling though. I really liked how he flowed black into the grooves around the trim to make it stand out more, never saw that done before. 1

His more-recent videos are more in-depth; all of his (handful of) videos are fun to watch. His painting of a 1/24 scale figure is a work of art!

I ended up buying both the Gun Chrome bottle as well as this Mr. Hobby Mr Color SM204 Super Metallic Stainless Steel 2 10ml – Burbank's House of Hobbies . Handling 'friendliness' is/ was a determining factor. While I've had no issues with Molotow nor with the 'Chrome Touch-Up Paint pen (sold through Classic Industries) --the latter being more resistant to handling-- I want to try other paints. That stainless steel (see link) seems promising.
Sandboarder Posted July 22, 2022 Posted July 22, 2022 Mr Hobby gun chrome is a pot of solvent based lacquer paint. As always airbrush for the best and most even results but of course you can brush it on. Ensure it fully mixed as mine brushed on a little grainy. I only don’t a small test as I intended to airbrush it but I have not at this stage. 1

I performed a test of it by brushing it over two separate spare chrome plated parts (I just wanted to see how it would look atop plating), and it presented quite nicely on one part, but was grainy on the other part. Same brush, same mixing before using (about 10 minutes apart). Now I am eager to employ me Prevail to paint the trim on me current project... but am at a bit of a loss on which thinner/"leveller" to use for that purpose. I recognise that Gunze offers via their Mr. Color line a couple of different thinners/levellers; but I'm a neophyte when it comes to proper thinners/reducers/levellers in respect to the type of paint. I would appreciate your opinion (and others' opinions) regarding this. Thanks.
Sandboarder Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 I mainly use thinners for airbrushing but I only use Mr Hobby Mr Levelling thinner for any lacquer paints. It’s a bit slower drying which helps the paint level and dry smooth. 1
