W Humble Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 I haven't built A/C in forty years, but I got a kit at the Yuba City (CA) show, and need silver paint suggestions for WWII Japanese Shinden Mk. 2 jet conversion. I want to build it as if it were a captured enemy A/C being wrung out by the allies. It would have a fine silver/metal color, and USAAF markings. This will be my interpretation of the Shinden with a jet engine -- not super authentic because I'm using what I think is a J47 (from an ancient Vought F8U Crusader I built in the mid-'fifties which I have made molds for and cast in resin. Still, could be fun. I have lots of automotive silvers, but all are 'glam' metallics, in 1/48 scale look like metalflake! Help an old modeler? Wick age 77
stitchdup Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 I'd try one of the aluminum paints or c1 powder (the silver you get with it depends on the base colour) this is the powders over a base of the green showing through (a 2hr build just for fun, 32 parts and 24 of them were the wheels, lol)
Tcoat Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 Yep, automotive "silvers" do not work for bare finish aircraft. Bare Metal foil is the best but can be tricky on complex curves. It is nice because you can mix up the different tones available for different panels. For painted bare metal aircraft I use: Tamiya acrylic Titanium silver X32 for a duller shine Or Modelmaster Chrome Silver FS17178 for a glossy finish
Leo64 Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 You might want to check out Tamiya's AS-12 Bare Metal Silver. I like it for things like exhausts on cars, haven't tried it on an aircraft yet, but that's what I think it was made for. Steve A.

Mike 1017 Posted December 7, 2022 Posted December 7, 2022 I use Testors Model Master Aluminum Plate. If you can find any, for me this is the best. After painting the model, it needs to be washed and then sealed. I also use Vallejo Jet Metallizer. Good luck Mike
