Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 (edited) Hello, Maties, here we go again, straight out of D. Cranky's Workshop . . . I started with the frame of the 41 Chevy pick up, the lastest issue from Revell, and modified the frame in the rear . . . as you can see . . . I glued down the floorboard so that it could be a guide for the impending body and bed . . . I think I shorted the frame by maybe 3 scale inches . . .not by choice but because of the type of bed this thing is going to carry. Edited February 12, 2009 by DamnCranky
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 Here's the mill . . . a straight six shooter . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 Here's the body, chopped about 4 scale inches . . . with the weld lines in place . . . The front arms are not aligned but that's going to help prop up the visor, which will work out perfect . . . Here's a shot of the grill and headlights . . . the 41 Chevy grill with some extensive cutting . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 And, of course, this needs no intruduction, but sufice it to say it took a lot of measuring, cutting, and adjusting . . . I dechromed everything on this tailend and glued it in place, filled all the nooks and crannies . . . and have been sanding everything smooth . . . I was not about to go crazy like what I went through with the last 59 Caddy I built, so long ago . . . right?
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 So here's how it's looking so far: And the funny thing is that the rear tires are going to ride outside of body . . . so tempted to make them duelys . . . so tempted.
dryvr12 Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Thats gunna b a beaut! Have you considered sanding down the line in the middle of the bed? Or are you going for a "covered" look. I think i just might have to break down and buy onea these kits
Clay Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 (edited) I'm sorry Virgil, but I wouldnt have chosen that rear end, the curves not being the same would bother the heck out of me, but hey its your plastic so do as you wish. I am sure it will be an awesome build when you are done and I will be following this one like all the other ones. Edited February 4, 2009 by Clay
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 Well I sure do appreciate the honesty, Clay. You know, it looks strange to me too, but I've always wanted to build one of these suckers, like the stuff I've seen in the mags, just totally incongrous and over the top . . . I wanted to use a 57 Thunderbird rear, but that didn't look right, and then I also tried a Falcon pick up bed . . . still didn't give me that over-the-top look, and then all I could think about was the 59 Caddy . . . Nothing about this build is set in stone yet. Heck, it's all still raw plastic. I'm gonna mull it over . . . Again, thanks for the candid assessment. That's how we help each other out on this forum.
Dave Mikrut Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Cranky, I love this thing!!! It's yer little dream car and imagination and vision is what makes this an artform. Youve definately got the knack for the outrageous, I'm diggin it the most!!!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 Thanks, but you guys keep me thinking . . . and tomorrow maybe I will cut off the roof and have this one be convertible. It's still very much in the planning stages. We'll see.
Hillbilly Deluxe Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I like it,I am curious to see how the bed ties in with the body. The 3 /4 front shot looks right on!!! Leave the roof, cool chop...how did you make the weld beads? very interesting John
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 Thanks, John. After I make the chop cuts and glue the top back, I put some half round rod on the seam, and then with my handy pen-size welder (Home Depot) I put in the beads . . . it's a slow process, but you'll ge the hang of it right way . . . besides, it's very forgiving a process in case of mistakes . . .
DR Dubois Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 That is just freaky!! I love it and wait to see more.
Terror Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 (edited) I'm with Clay on this one.Just make that grill area look more tailgatee, if thats a word?Over all I like the side look alot.Reminds me of a BatTruck. Edited February 4, 2009 by Terror
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 All right, maties, here's an update on the revision work I've done on everything. I think it's got just the right look now . . . but you will tell me if you like it. Don't hold anything back . . . Here's the shortened frame now with the body--I decided to keep the chopped top--but tacked up the visor so you can get an idea . . . . I added a little touch from the Caddy interior to the cab just for the look of it . . . Here's the new bed . . . I narrowed it and shortened it so that it looks a bit more stubby.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 Here are a few more angles . . . the bed is tacked on there so it still looks wobbly, but it's fine and square . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 A couple more: It really does look sleeker now, and once the white wall tires are riding on the outside, I think it's going to look just right!
CB Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Cranky, O Cranky, how can I say this? ........... ok, how 'bout: most excellently awesome and yet....... go with the duallies, Virg.........yer eyes are gittin' heavy go with the duallies go with the duallies go with the duallies cluck like a chicken where'd you get that 6shooter? it looks so cool with no valve cover
