tuffone20 Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I want to build a car hauler using the AMT 55' chevy truck & the Model King racer's wedge and I'm not sure how to go about making the duel rear end setup for it? I have 3 of the truck kits and have made the frame longer but am stuck on how to do the rear ends?
Smart-Resins Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 That is indeed a good question as I will be doing a 50 ford version soon. Jody
The Modeling Hermit Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 This is from memory of a truck that I saw in the seventies. The front rear axle was the only one that was powered. The far rear axle was on it's own springs, and was simply square tubing, and had no brakes on it. I think it only had three springs, and each one was substantially shorter than the one above it. Remember that this is a thirty some year old memory, from something that I only saw once. The crew that owned it was parked next to our car, and they had a flat, so I got to watch them fix it. The hub looked much like a disk brake rotor, but only contained the studs for mounting the tire, and that's all. What was more prominent was the tire rack mounted on the front of the box. The box was shaped much the same as what you have, but there was a framework tire rack that sat above the front of the racecar, and overhung the roof of the truck. I wish I could remember it better, but I hope that helps.
monkeyclaw Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 (edited) I agree with Kodiak; Your best option is to simply use the kit rear end on the forward most rear axle.....the least amount of modifying that way....then simpy "tag" axle the rear axle...you can find good pix for an air lift axle from a big rig with a bit of google image.... and just build it sized to your truck...I would say an air ride axle is the easiest to do....but remember to establish the ride height up FRONT first.....you need to have your truck on the tires.....front and 1st rear axle....this way your truck will sit with all 6 tires on the ground; even if you have a nice rake in the ride height.....I hope this helps........matt Edited February 8, 2009 by monkeyclaw
The Modeling Hermit Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Matt, thanks. I strained my brain and just could not think of the name of that rear axle. It must have been one of those senior moments that I'm having way too often. LOL
tuffone20 Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 Thanks guys I'll look into doing the air ride setup.
tuffone20 Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Well I went out to my work area and was looking at this build when I got an hair up you know where and starting cutting up some cabs and this is what I ended up some with! Let me what you guys think? I left room behind the cab and the hauler to add a storge space & and roof rack for tires?
The Modeling Hermit Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 How are you proceeding on this truck. Your changes aren't in my taste, but that'e just personal. I think you're going to have a fine truck when you're done. I drove dirt track stock cars back in the seventies, so I expect you to place a proper dirt tracker on it. LOL
tuffone20 Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 (edited) I haven't done a lot with it yet. Did some sanding and stuff on it. Still not sure if I'll go with this cab or go back to a stock cab? But here is an updated photo of it. Oh and for what it will be hauling around? Edited February 12, 2009 by tuffone20

tuffone20 Posted October 11, 2010 Author Posted October 11, 2010 This project is dead as I'm no longer building and have moved away from using the Chevy truck. Just a update.
