lowriderphil Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 So, I just started on this tonight. Please ignore the fact that its from legos, money is tight right now and I have a few thousand pieces laying around. Once the glue dries the walls will be sprayed with some rock texture paint. The spray booth measures17'x25' and the work area measures19'x25'. I still have to add the side part which will be 12'x22' and will have 8' ceilings instead of 12' like the shop. also across the back wall of the shop will be a loft like shelf for storage uses. phil
James W Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 The legos are not a bad idea as long as you have them. Is the base plex or glass? I think plexiglass would flex too much.
Smart-Resins Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Very interesting concept there. Just dont show my kids that! LOL. Jody
Eshaver Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 James , for my bases that i build under my service stations , I generally build them from quarter inch material such as veneer Birch and Synar Cycolac Plastic. Uh sign guys use the plastic . I then build a "Box frame " around the parameter as this strengthens but enhances the project , ( SEE THE SHELL SHAPED SHELL STATION IN DIORAMA). You don't have to glue the board to the frame either . Just put blocks around to "Float the base in the frame ". Look, I saw the I P M S boys doing this with their W W II stuff, judges like it and it wins contests, nuff said! Ed Shaver

scubadiver411 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Howz the shop coming along ?? My boyz where building a "garage" for their hotwheels tonite and I told my wife about your garage you built with Lego's. I told her when the kids get older... I'm taking the Lego's for myself. So, since I was here, I thought I would check and see if you have any updated pics of the shop yet ?? STEVE ALLEN
Scott H. Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 The legos is a good idea that I haven't thought about! That's definitely thinking outside the box for building materials. With the way the economy is turning, doing something with materials you already have is a perfect solution. Besides, you can tell people you're just building "Green" models! I'm willing to bet that one you cut the round locator pins off the top of the Legos, they'll look just like cement blocks with just a coat of primer and paint. I'm not so sure i would use the textured paint on this one. It looks like a good start and I can't wait to see what you do with it. -Scott H.
lowriderphil Posted March 28, 2009 Author Posted March 28, 2009 sorry for the delay in responding, been working crazy hours and haven't had a chance to check up on things. Well the bench/surrounding area will be getting a heavy cleaning at some point this week, at which time I plan to glue very thin sheets of plywood to the back of the walls for rigidity. If the can of primer sealer I have will give a uniform block color it will be just a cinder block wall as opposed to stucko. I may have to scribe a few lines though as some of the blocks are longer, to keep it uniform. As for the top of the walls, once I remove the pegs, they will get a good sanding and capped off with 1/4" wide bass wood strips prior to painting. Still haven't decided on a roof yet, but it may just be a flat roof with some "I" beams for support and some sky lights.
moparmagiclives Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 It would be a great painting exercise to leave the lego texture under the paint on the shop walls and roof line and duplicate it on your models, fine lines and some small round rod for the "lego" block look. Almost like a lego model of a plastic model of a real shop.....wait I think I'm lost now.
