Fletch Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) This is one of 3 projects that I hope to have completed before The Bob Paeth Portland Classic Model Car Contest. The Bub Johnson '29 RPU is now completed. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17951 The '32 Vicki is in primer after some additional body work was completed. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17607 So, time to get back to the '50 Pickup. I have chopped several of the Revell '50 Ford Pickups over the years. This time around I tried something different. By quartering the roof the chop went a whole lot smoother then in the past with cutting wedges in the roof. The ride height was adjusted by mounting the stock front and rear axles on top of the springs. The tires are from the '50 kit with wheel covers from AMTs Edsel Ranger. I had originally planned to use the 352 from the Edsel as well but one of the T-bird engines from the Mysterion ended up under the hood. Originally this was to represent a well kept parts chaser for some speed shop. A duel purpose pickup, chasing parts Monday - Friday and winning shows on the weekends. The plan for paint was yellow with red scallops, but after seeing it in white primer the plans changed. Hosted on Fotki The paint is now Testors One Coat Lacquer "White Lightning". Left to do at this point are the finish the Red & White Tuck n' Roll interior as well as the toneau cover which will be finished to complement the interior. I'm down to less then 3 weeks before the show, so time to get back to the bench. Thanks for checking out the build. Your comments are always welcome. Dave aka Fletch Edited May 22, 2009 by Fletch
E St. Kruiser50 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Hey Dave This looks very nice. Looks like you got some color on it , looks great. I hope to see this at the show - dave
Fletch Posted February 15, 2009 Author Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) Hey Dave This looks very nice. Looks like you got some color on it , looks great. I hope to see this at the show - dave Hey Mr Dave, the middle 2 pics are primer only, the last 2 are with the Testors Once Coat Lacquer. It's great paint, but like any paint, unless you're extremely lucky, requires additional work to get the desired finish. So, it has been sanded out and is now ready for the second coat of paint. Not sure if I'll use the Testors Lacquer for the second go round or the HOK "Snowhite". More then anything else it will depend upon the weather. Either way it's definitely going to be White Pearl. A well kept parts chaser indeed! Very nice 'lines' and proportions Dave. Subtle yet so effective chop. Has such a 'real' believable look to it, and very deserving of the pearl paint. Can't wait to see the red & white in/on it. Wonder how it would look with red steelies with the full hubcaps, showing just a thin red circle?
Fletch Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 (edited) Wonder how it would look with red steelies with the full hubcaps, showing just a thin red circle? Not sure John as the Edsel caps are meant to be the wheels as well as the wheel covers. I do know that the centers of the caps are going to be painted red before setting the center spinners on the caps. Wouldn't be that difficult to pop the covers back off and mock up a set of steelies to see how it would look. Edited February 16, 2009 by Fletch
Fletch Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 Guess we should subtitle this one "Follow Your Own Advice!" This is what happens when you try to rush a paint job to get ready for a contest. Hosted on Fotki
Fletch Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 (edited) I'm not sure if the problem was weather caused or if it's just the way that particular color works. The problem was just as you had indicated Mike, coverage it way to heavy straight from the can. Because of that the paint sags and runs. I have not had this problem with any of the other Testors One Coat Lacquers. So far it's been in the purple pond for about 18 hours and is about 80% clean. Once it's out of the pond, it'll be fix any problems with the joints in the roof if needed. Then back to paint, except this time the white pearl will be HoK Snowhite. Fletch Posted February 23, 2009 Author Posted February 23, 2009 You and me both John. The roof has been had new Polyester putty applied. The rest of the parts have been primed and are now waiting for color. I think instead of using the Testors One Coat, I'm going to go and grab either Dupli-color or Plasti-coat white for the base coat. Then use the HoK Snowhite for the pearl. So, it will put me a couple of days behind. It's not the end of the world.
Fletch Posted April 3, 2009 Author Posted April 3, 2009 (edited) Well boys and girls we're back for the swim in the Purple Pond, none the worse for it. The bodywork that was affected by the CSC has been repaired and the base coat has been applied and has "gassed out." We are suppose to have temperatures in the high 60s low 70s this weekend so time to shoot the HoK Snowhite Pearl. I did however take a suggestion from CB and added color to the wheel covers. Actually, I remembered that in the pre-paint version of the '58 Edsel Pacer the wheel covers were painted. Just so happens someone put a couple of them up for auction on eModel Cars and at around $11 shipping included, I didn't figure I could go wrong. Hosted on Fotki Edited April 3, 2009 by Fletch

MikeMc Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Love the chop..... Have you thought of using pearl flake in your clear over the base of white?
Fletch Posted April 5, 2009 Author Posted April 5, 2009 (edited) Love the chop..... Have you thought of using pearl flake in your clear over the base of white? I hadn't considered it Mike but, it's not a bad idea. After your suggestion I looked through my collection of Pearl Ex. The only ones I have in my stash today are Interference Gold, Aztec Gold, Reflex Violet, and Pearl White. The Interference Gold is more along the lines of a white gold, where the Pearl White is of course pure white. I don't know if I'll use any of them but the Interference Gold over the HoK Snowhite could be interesting. I think I'll shoot a scrap piece of plastic to see how it looks before committing to the entire model. Thanks for the suggestion. Dave Edited April 5, 2009 by Fletch
Dr. Cranky Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 I like this truck very much. Nice job! It's got a great stance.
Fletch Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 (edited) Well, we're back in pearl. Shot the HoK Snowhite this afternoon. I'm not totally thrilled with the results. Above the drivers side of the grille it has what looks like acne. I think it's one of those where I didn't have the paint cut properly. Oh well, just means more work sanding it out before the clear coat. Here's a shot of the bed cover. It's a mix of Evergreen V-Groove siding with .100 spacing and .080 half round. The stand up ribs will be red and the rest white pearl. Hosted on Fotki I had ran out of clear coat so I headed to the paint supply store yesterday. I told the guy behind the counter that I needed PPG Clear Coat, Hardener and Medium Reducer. He heads down the isle to get the product. Comes back, puts it in the computer and says that will be $117.46 like it was no big deal. My jaw bounced off the floor. I'm like are you sure that's correct? He says yeah, that's the price. At this point I'm like do you carry any other brands? Of course they do. So, I walked out with a quart of OMNI Clear (PPG's House brand) and hardener for $31.63. OMNI requires no reducer to spray. Even PPG's prices have gone sky high in this whacked economy. I don't know if this will be completed by the NNL or not but I'm certainly going to try. Edited April 8, 2009 by Fletch
PlasticWagens Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Dave, I use Omni clear pretty religiously and not because of price. It simply goes on really well, while allowing me to really hog on my last coat to get the wet look I like.
CB Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Does that mean every time you use it, you Pray that it lays down good? Man, Mike! with some of these here kits, and paints, 'PRAYER IS REQUIRED' oughta be on the box and part of the instructions. I'm bettin' Dave's '50 wouldn't be lookin' so fine -now- if'n he didn't do his share of prayin'. Almost looks like it just needs a good rubbin' out and that pearl gonna really shine, and then if'n you squirts some of that wet lookin' clear on it......WHOA! That bed cover gonna look really good in paint. Way to go Dave
Fletch Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 I'm bettin' Dave's '50 wouldn't be lookin' so fine -now- if'n he didn't do his share of prayin'. John my friend you know it all to well. Something about I can do all thing through him who is in me. Like my good friend Treehugger Dave always tells me we should use our modeling skills as a way to reach out and talk to others about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Sorry, once a preacher, always a Preacher. Now I'll get out from behind the Pulpit and go back to building.
