Sooner rather than later it does affect things here in the states........... Ed Shaver

One of the basic aspects of our economy is that when people have less money to spend, they spend it on necessities. I hate to be a bearer of bad news, but model cars and supplies are not necessities. Food, clothes, housing, gasoline, transportation, etc. are necessities.

Rising unemployment means less money to spend on "extras" like models.

Recent news tells us that in the U.S., the amount of money going into savings is on the rise. The uncertainty of the future in this economy has people saving their money. Nearly every business is showing slower sales than last year, and model makers and suppliers are not the exception.

There are signs that the economy is slowly turning around, but the recent 31% increase in the cost of new model kits isn't going to help. Less than a year ago you could buy a new Revell car kit for less than $20 anywhere. Since last summer the price of a new Revell car kit has gone from around $17 to nearly $25. Its not entirely Revell's fault however. The combination of higher crude oil prices last summer, higher transportation costs, and a slowing economy have reduced model company revenues and increased expenses.

We've already seen this among the Japanese manufacturers. It used to be that Japanese Kits were competitive with US prices, but the economy in Japan has slowed and shipping expenses have gone up. While the quality of some Japanese kits has improved greatly, it costs money to make those improvements and make the new tooling.

As the US economy improves and Americans have more money to spend, the model companies will be less reluctant to bring out new kits and products. We'll have to wait and see.

I saw the title "unemployment" and thought ...hmm, what kind of model would be named this way? I seriously didn't expect to see this horse caca. What surprised me is there are actually responses

Oh look someone put some meat like product in your disk drive. That's something my wife would let our kids do if I had kids.

Here I go and make a serious attempt to give a serious answer, and the funny men (in more than one sense of the word) took over the thread. Oh, well...
