absmiami Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 The cyl head was then masked for some fl black on the cam covers - ill probably sand off those breathers and make some new ones - 1
absmiami Posted October 31, 2023 Author Posted October 31, 2023 The cam covers - they are darker than the cyl head - but they aren’t painted - so the Tamiya black looks good but isn’t correct …
absmiami Posted October 31, 2023 Author Posted October 31, 2023 Had the bright idea of breaking out some old stock froquil grimey black - its super flat - but still looks “painted” - so that wasn’t the answer …
absmiami Posted October 31, 2023 Author Posted October 31, 2023 So i went back into my Tamiya drawer for some gun metal - which was brush painted over the fl black - then high lighted with some Tamiya oil and burnt metal weathering pastels - this gets me close - maybe close enough - gives me a gun barrell sort of look ….
absmiami Posted October 31, 2023 Author Posted October 31, 2023 With some more weathering and high-lights on some of the bolts and flanges - almost there - maybe tone down the cam covers - then add the bolts … 1
Pierre Rivard Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 (edited) Engine looks good Andy. Don"t know it it could help but I painted mine flat Aluminium with the covers a 2/1 mix of aluminium and black , then a flat clear, then Vallejo Oiled Earth wash which gave it depth and a bit of the grimy look I was looking for. Edited November 1, 2023 by Pierre Rivard
absmiami Posted November 1, 2023 Author Posted November 1, 2023 Vallejo also advertises a paint for engine oil stains - time to try some ...
absmiami Posted November 2, 2023 Author Posted November 2, 2023 Decided instead to dilute the Tamiya oil powder in some Alclad clear lite sheen gloss - with a little burnt metal - turned out pretty good - ive now got an eighty eight year old engine - sort of …
absmiami Posted November 2, 2023 Author Posted November 2, 2023 On go the oil pipes - front and rear …
Pierre Rivard Posted November 2, 2023 Posted November 2, 2023 Engine looks much better. Should be amazing once finished with all the detailing.
Pg265 Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Hi, Beautiful car and stunning details on the engine: Bravo! Pascal
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 Gracias - were you the builder that posted the forum build of the MFH 12th scale Alfa P2 ?? - think they produced one about 5 yrs ago - right ?? Not this yr - but i plan to convert Pinto’s P2 to a series Ii car - the one with the spare wheel riding behind the fuel tank in the tail -
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 There will be about a dozen changes to the body and susp to do the Don Lee Special - one is to change the outboard oil lines - removing two and rerouting the remaining two - and i used a Tamiya scriber to sharpen the relief of the remaining lines on the chassis rail …
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 This photo shows the oil lines and brings me to a major fix for the kit - the pegs on the tips of the exhaust pipes are angled - causing the exhaust to ride too high on the side of the body - driver would not want the pipe at his elbow -
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 Hard to see - i think these pix show the wayward pegs …
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 So the exhaust leaves the cyl head at this angle - which is about 6 sc inches too high …
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 So the pegs came off the holes were drilled into the exhausts for new pegs made fr Evergreen .030 rod - with the correct orientation .
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 That brought the pipe down to the correct line on the body - but now the pipe rides too far outside of the body …. Oops
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 So the exhaust was shortened about 16th inch - and the tips then re-drilled for the new -Evergreen tips …
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 Thats the fix - the secondary exhaust pipe - repped by this vintage - used and weathered toothpick - will sweep past the cockpit below the cutout with just enough space for the heat shield …
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 But one change always requires another - the exhaust now interferes w the side panel …
absmiami Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 But that’s fixable w/out much drama - files, sanding sticks, and a scaper reshape the cutout and shorten the height of the louvers - which are incidentally - very nicely cast …
Rattlecan Dan Posted November 9, 2023 Posted November 9, 2023 Lots of excellent modeling going on here. Great attention to detail.
Pierre Rivard Posted November 9, 2023 Posted November 9, 2023 I feel your pain Andy. I went through a similar scenario working out the exhaust pipes on my 8C. Felt like a dog chasing his tail. Lots of work but you'll end up routing it the way it should be. Are the parts very brittle on your's. I kept breaking up the engine outlets despite heating up the parts.
