The cam covers - they are darker than the cyl head - but they aren’t painted - so the Tamiya black looks good but isn’t correct …

Had the bright idea of breaking out some old stock froquil grimey black - its super flat - but still looks “painted” - so that wasn’t the answer …

So i went back into my Tamiya drawer for some gun metal - which was brush painted over the fl black - then high lighted with some Tamiya oil and burnt metal weathering pastels - this gets me close - maybe close enough - gives me a gun barrell sort of look ….

With some more weathering and high-lights on some  of the bolts and flanges - almost there - maybe tone down the cam covers - then add the bolts …

Engine looks good Andy. Don"t know it it could help but I painted mine flat Aluminium with the covers a 2/1 mix of aluminium and black , then a flat clear, then Vallejo Oiled Earth wash which gave it depth and a bit of the grimy look I was looking for.

Decided instead to dilute the Tamiya oil powder in some Alclad clear lite sheen gloss - with a little burnt metal - turned out pretty good - ive now got an eighty eight year old engine - sort of …

There will be about a dozen changes to the body and susp to do the Don Lee Special - one is to change the outboard oil lines  - removing two and rerouting the remaining two - and i used a Tamiya scriber to sharpen the relief of the remaining lines on the chassis rail …

This photo shows the oil lines and brings me to a major fix for the kit - the pegs on the tips of the exhaust pipes are angled - causing the exhaust to ride too high on the side of the body - driver would not want the pipe at his elbow -

So the pegs came off the holes were drilled into the exhausts for new pegs made fr Evergreen .030 rod - with the correct orientation .

Thats the fix - the secondary exhaust pipe - repped by this vintage - used and weathered toothpick - will sweep past the cockpit below the cutout with just enough space for the heat shield …

But that’s fixable w/out much drama - files, sanding sticks, and a scaper reshape the cutout and shorten the height of the louvers - which are incidentally - very nicely cast …

I feel your pain Andy. I went through a similar scenario working out the exhaust pipes on my 8C. Felt like a dog chasing his tail. Lots of work but you'll end up routing it the way it should be. Are the parts very brittle on your's. I kept breaking up the engine outlets despite heating up the parts.
