I'm sold on the new gasser version for sure. I'll have to unload the couple of AMT kits that I have. I do like the AMT body however.

I think Fremont? Makes an altered wheelbase body for the Moebius kit

Thanks, I'll take a look. I find their stuff mainly on eBay. 

EDIT: I did find one on eBay from a vendor who deals in Fremont stuff. His name is "paintinjoe". I have bought from him recently, a '35 Chevy modified body.

 Cobbled this together a few years ago (or many years. Don't remember) off the interweb. Ain't saying it's 100% accurate.

1966 Experimental Stock (XS) Rules

Reprinted from the April 1, 1966 issue of National DRAGSTER

Revisions based on 1967 rules are in RED.

Six new classes for Funny Cars have been added to the National Hot Rod Association's 1966 competition rules.

The new section's classes will be known as Experimental Stock (XS), and are for 1964 and later highly modified stock cars.

In order to allow their participation in the '66 World Championship Series and other events at NHRA sanctioned strips, the late-model hot rod XS classes will have their own set of national records, with standard elapsed time records for the Eliminator handicaps.

The XS classes will be determined primarily by total car weight, with minimum permissible weights per class as follows:

S/XS 2000 lbs. minimum (1967)

A/XS 2000 lbs. minimum (1966, 1967)

B/XS 2600 lbs. minimum (1966)  2400 lbs. minimum (1967)

C/XS 3000 lbs. minimum (1966, 1967)

D/XS 3200 lbs. minimum (1966)  3400 lbs. minimum (1967)

E/XS 3400 lbs. minimum (1966 only)

Only one engine is allowed per car.

All rear engined cars will be classified S/XS. Others classes must have engine in front of driver.

Make or model of engine is optional, as long as it is an automobile engine of 1964 or later production.

No limit to engine setback for S/XS. For the rest maximum permissible engine setback is 25 percent of the total wheelbase, measured from the centerline of the front spindles to the engine's nearest spark plug hole.

Maximum allowable engine displacement for S/XS and A/XS and B/XS cars is unlimited.

Maximum for all other XS cars is 430 cubic inches.

Engine modifications are optional in XS classes.

S/XS is for all supercharged cars.

S/XS is for cars with excess engine setback (greater than 25%).

S/XS is for rear engined cars.

Either carburetors or injectors are acceptable in the A/XS and B/XS classes.

Remaining classes are restricted to carburetors only.

Fuel type is optional for S/XS, A/XS, and B/XS class. The other XS classes are limited to gasoline only.

Bodies must be of a type manufactured for 1964 or later stock cars, unaltered in size and general contour. Fiberglass or aluminum bodies and components may be used. Four stock type fenders are required, which may be elongated to accommodate axle relocations.

Frames may be stock production, altered production or special tubular construction. Full automotive type front suspension is required. Rigid mounted rear axles are permissible. Minimum permissible wheelbase for all XS cars is 100 inches. Safety hubs are required. Locked differentials are not allowed. Wheel track width may not be narrowed more than four inches per the original specifications for the type of body used. Four-wheel-drive or front-drive cars are not eligible to compete in XS classes.

A roll cage, suitably reinforced and braced, is required for all S/XS and A/XS cars. All other XS classes require roll bars. Maximum removable weight for ballast is 100 lbs. No disguised ballast is permitted. Parachutes are required on all S/XS and A/XS cars and on all cars in other XS classes having only two-wheel brakes. Fire-protective suits are required for drivers of all fuel-burning S/XS and A/XS cars and are recommended for others.

Explosion-proof flywheels and pressure plates are required in all stick-shift cars in XS classes, as are adequate scattershields. Safety rules applying to NHRA's Altered classes generally pertain to the XS classes, with Fuel class rules in effect for fuel-burning S/XS and A/XS cars.

Eliminator handicaps for the new XS classes will be based on official elapsed-time records, per NHRA's national records procedure. Cars in the S/XS class will compete in the Super Eliminator finals. Cars in the A/XS class will compete in the Competition Eliminator finals, while cars in B/XS, C/XS, D/XS and E/XS will run in Street Eliminator finals.

S/XS: 2000 LBS. MIN./Supercharged (or excess engine setback, i.e.greater than 25%)
A/XS: 2000 LBS. MIN. NON-SUPERCHARGED/MAX 25% SETBACK
S/XS,A/XS,and B/XS (2400 LBS.) could use any fuel.
C/XS (3000 LBS.) and D/XS (3400 LBS.) restricted to gasoline
All rear engined cars regardless of weight/fuel/induction would be S/XS
There was no official Funny Elim. in '68 .
S/XS class winner (and qual. cars) ran in Super Elim. against AA/GS, AA/C, AA/FA, AA/A etc.

O.K., I'll play.  Built these about twenty years ago.  I don't get too wound up about their true scale accuracy - to me they are just a fun build that looks cool.

Does anyone know what the intent was for the "door knocker"engraved into the dashboard?  I've never been able to work it out!

Hmmm,  parachute release handle perhaps.

My favourite has always been the 66 Mustang AWB. I always thought the box art was the best of the lot.
