CaddyDaddy Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 I’ve been using some PPP tires in my stock car builds. Rough them up a bit, apply decals, and hit them with some Dull Coat. I would like to open what’s available to me by using some resin tires. Here, there are some options that I can’t get with the “flexible” tires. However, I have no idea whatsoever on how to prepare these resin tires. What paint do you use ( I don’t have an airbrush......yet)?How do you get that “worn” look? Any help, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, would be greatly appreciated.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 2, 2024 Posted January 2, 2024 Thorough cleaning of resin parts is a good idea prior to applying primer or paint. I prefer to scrub with Comet, hot water, and a toothbrush, air dry, then a quick wash with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Afterwards, any rattlecan paint you'd use on plastic will work fine. SEM flexible black coating makes a very nice "new" finish for tires, as do many cheap flat and semi-gloss spray paints. It's really all about looking at pix of real tires, then experimenting until you get the effect that looks right to you.
bobss396 Posted January 2, 2024 Posted January 2, 2024 Ron Coon makes what I will call the best resin slick tires for the modifieds. Look at his T11 and T19 tires. Also his wheels and hubs are very good. I go with the 3/8" deep ones. They work well with the MPC modified backings. All of the above need to be cleaned/soaked before prime & paint. I use warm water and dish soap for a few hours. I then using the same soapy water, scrub with a toothbrush. The last ones I followed up with the toothbrush again and Soft Scrub. I'm sure Comet is just as good. I use what I have. One set I just painted with Tamiya TS63 or TS82, no primer. I had taped them to cardboard with 2-sided tape and when I stuck the finished side down, the paint came off when I took them off. Primer is highly recommended.
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted January 3, 2024 Posted January 3, 2024 https://www.modelhaustires.com/ nice selection, shipped quickly. The center holes fit AMT wheels, not Revell. Shoot them with Tamiya Rubber Black.... -RRR
