road/exhaust dirt

how does a person (me) apply road/exhaust dirt to a model ? i've seen a few on this forum that look real nice and real. is it airbrushed on ? i do not have an airbrush yet.

There are many youtube videos on weathering car models, railroad models, and military models.

All the techniques can be used on anything.

Watch lotsa videos, get ideas, try it yourself.

thank you for your reply. i'm going to look for some black colored brush on makeup! i've used shades of brown on my vintage dirt track cars that worked very well i think.
