HEY ALL :D

This thread is kinda "piggy-backing" 84vanagon's thread, with mag cover pics and the inside article pics, from a Rod & Custom Car Mag., especially for those who haven't seen one of these old mags before.

This sure brings back memories.

My "Pink Leprachaun" is in the 4th pic, top left.

This sure is fun to share - Imagine 47 years ago ;) .

The date on the cover say's June '62, and the PRICE IS 25 CENTS :o .

THIS IS HOW WE DID IT BACK IN THE DAY :D .

Just a bunch a kids havin' fun.

The cover is really cool. It shows Ed Roth debuting his "ROTAR" show vehicle.

Top left you can see my custom '61 Pontiac Tempest - Sorta :o . My first scratch-built body and frame.

Bottom right, a drag car that was built by a friend Walter (Woodie) Wood.

Thank you Dave for this wonderful trip down memory lane.

50 years ago we were just "youngan's", doin' what we loved.

Here we are today still doin' it.

To me, that say's something about how great this hobby is, and also the people.

I'd be around another 50 years if I could.

Us "Dinasaurs" from the "Flintstone Age" of modeling don't go away easily :D .

Thanks for posting those cool pics Dave! :D

I was going to dig through my old R&C's, but that's one I don't think I have.

I'm going to dig though as I have several, sans covers. Now I know which issue to look for!

I just went back and re-read your post.

Two things stood out:

The monthly R&C was twenty five cents.

The Model Car special was a whopping $1.00, pretty big money for a magazine in '62! :D

The other was your word "FUN".

I have no doubt that every model pictured in Model Cars Illustrated (how's that from a blast

from the past), Rod & Custom Models, Car Modeler and Model Car Science didn't have every

bit of heart that the ones in M.C.M and S.A. (can I say that here?!LOL) do.

But today there is a sterility, a lack of whimsy and what-if that was ok to do back then.

Dave said the key word "FUN"!

Looks like you and your buddy did some really nice work back then. That was the good old days. There were some very crude models back then in magazines that would never be seen today. The imagination was something to see back then. I get my old magazines out every now and then and just marvel at some of the old models built back then.

Cool Dave!! That Tempest looks like it made the rounds.. even the REAL rod mags!!! That's some severe bodywork and looks great! Curious .... what did you use for putty back then? That is awesome to have published models from way back then.

Hi Don ;)

You're certaintly right about the "FUN". That's what it was all about back then. Ronny Brown, Joe Bernardt, and I were all friends first, and loved to build and compete against each other. We never cared who won, we'd just do better the next time and maybe win. NO EGO'S OR ARROGANCE back then. .

The "TWO" big differences I see now after 50 years, is the average age of the builder's, being mostly adult now, as opposed to mostly kids back then.

The second "HUGE" difference I see, hear and experience in this hobby, is the GIGANTIC ARROGANCE & EGOTISM by men way old enough to know better, some on this forum, some in mags or at model events. Some pretty big.

You all know the one's - THE "GRAND PUBA" TYPES ^_^ .

When I was a kid we'd never think of "Slighting" someone, because we thought we were better.

We were taught to care about people, and to help each other to be better, and be good as other's.

Kinda make's me ashamed of some pretty important people I met and looked up to, only to find out they were part of a "Clique", or fan club, that would go OOOH and AWWWE and constantly praise him.

Made me want to throw up  .

I learned early in life that feelin' good about yourself was about how you chose to feel about yourself, not what other's thought.

It's nice to get compliment's about your work, or be able to brag once in a while, I sure do, but that shouldn't be about why you do it, or the only reason you feel good about yourself.

To me, feeling good about yourself is about how you choose to live your whole life with other's, not just about how you do a part of it. I GUESS THAT'S JUST "OLD SCHOOL THINKIN' AND LEARNIN", but it sure has worked for me ;) .

Life for me isn't about how good you are at somethin', even though this hobby is fun, it's about what kind of friend and human being you are to others.

I couldn't have said it better if I tried. I was just thinking about this very subject when I came across your post. It's about FUN. My life is made immeasurably better by my model building. The funny thing is, it has taught me many lessons about looking outside of myself. As I study others' builds, I am forced to look at life through the eyes of the builders.

Super egocentricity will turn rapidly into narcissism if left unchecked, and that's a truly scary mental disease. Looking outside of yourself is the only way to stay sane.

When I am building, I don't watch TV or listen to radio. I get into a zone of Zen meditation, which slows my heartbeat and lowers my blood pressure.

Everyone should think about why he or she is building models. If it is about self glorification, maybe you should step back away from it for a while until your head is right.

if it counts at all, i dont believe ive ever met anyone in the model hobby who was all that egotistical. its just building pieces of plastic after all. in fact ive found the opposite: there have been way more people willing to explain and help than anything else.

anyway thanks for posting the cool mag article! i remember reading the mags back then and just drooling over models they featured, never thinking any way i could ever do as good! in fact i think i remember reading this very article and being very taken by your friends rod there (your tempest is magnificent but wasnt really my style...though i admired those wild customs like that). but your friends rod there with the removable body really appealed to me. thanks for bringing up the memories!

i also really loved that ranchero at the bottom of page two, and that ala kart in the display; also that outrageous interior on the 40 ford convert and wish they had more photos of that large show diorama!

I love it!! I actually own a copy of that mag and remember those days when NOBODY would be caught dead building something that was pure stock! No rules, just right.

Amen Dave,Amen. Sometimes I truly miss those days. Anything you built was alright and cool to each other. We had some pretty wild ideas (not always in scale) but who cared. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Richard
