Jürgen M. Posted June 28, 2024 Author Posted June 28, 2024 Yes, that must be tough for a passenger if anyone has ever punnished himself that way! I tried to at least simmulate the size and attributes of the ntc290. I know it's not really a good copy but considering that it will hardly be visible I left it that way! Of course what you see in the video is only the block with intake/exhaust manifolds and turbo charger. The rest will be taken over from its "big brother"!
Rockford Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 Jürgen, all you need is rear view of the engine so I wouldn't worry too much. What you've done so far seems way too much in terms of detail. The transmission is more visible, probably a Roadranger of some sort. The rear end of the block appears to be about level with the rear wall of the cab so I'd just work to that. Modelling is like art, my old art teacher used to say 'you paint what the eye sees, not what you know to be there'. Sometimes we can destroy ourselves on details that will never be seen.
Jürgen M. Posted June 29, 2024 Author Posted June 29, 2024 (edited) True words Rockford! Thanks for taking me down again! I've always been trying to catch the main Impression avoiding to get too much into details. As a matter of fact I called it freedom of art myself once when I had lost details where noone would see it. Still sometimes you get lost in the wish of perfection. Anyway, I began printing the first parts of the Conco yesterday. This is the chassis. I decided to make it a tri-axle. Still has to be "cleaned"! Edited June 29, 2024 by Jürgen M. 2
Jürgen M. Posted June 30, 2024 Author Posted June 30, 2024 (edited) Some more printing progress: The engine block was printed in one piece as well as the rear axles with the in between driveshaft. Edited June 30, 2024 by Jürgen M. 2 1
Jürgen M. Posted July 3, 2024 Author Posted July 3, 2024 Printed the cab! Unfortunately the window struts broke aß removed the support structures. I'll have to extract them Out of the 3D drawings and print them again separately! The small parts are the cab supports! 1
Jürgen M. Posted July 3, 2024 Author Posted July 3, 2024 I printed the window struts and fitted them in! Cab and hood also fit together! 1
Rockford Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 Great progress, well done. Unfortunate about the struts snapping but at least you didn't throw it out the window, which I'd be tempted to do after all that time designing and printing. Cummins looks good, great job.
Jürgen M. Posted July 3, 2024 Author Posted July 3, 2024 Thanks Rockford, I am glad I was able to replace the struts! The print of the cab takes a lot of filament and 15hrs. of time! So it was no option printing a second time! The hood must be printed again though since the hinges broke off and they're very hard to replace! Also I had to make it a bit wider. Hope it comes out well!
Jürgen M. Posted July 4, 2024 Author Posted July 4, 2024 Making progress. Front axle and springs permanently attached to chassis. Optimized hood hinged up to cab. I had to extract the top part of the hood with the hinges due to troubles in printing. Worked out well and the smaller part was easier to fit in and hinge up than the whole hood. Grille is also printed! Now that I finished the necessary parts for matching up engine, chassis and cab I can measure out the sizes and lenghts of the air cleaner hose and the exhaust system and design them.
Jürgen M. Posted July 5, 2024 Author Posted July 5, 2024 Quarter fenders - try out if they fit! and battery box in place! 1
Randy D Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Hello Jurgen, Always fun and informative to follow along as you create and print!!!! Randy
Jürgen M. Posted July 9, 2024 Author Posted July 9, 2024 Well thank you Randy, nice to hear that you enjoy my builds. I really appreciate it! Hope the rest will be as much fun too!
Gary Chastain Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Great progress, great to see you don’t get discouraged when things don’t go well, good recovery.
Jürgen M. Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 Thanks Gary! I'm not the type to quit or get discouraged. Of course we all know it can get very annoying sometimes when everything seems to go wrong! The problem with designing and printing is that you tend to over see things and then discover that things don't fit like you imagined! Happens on and on. Here's some more progress: The chassis is finished! Just the tool box is missing! No painting here, chassis stays black. Just a few details will be emphasized! Wheels look quite nice.
Jürgen M. Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 It's getting there! Wheels mounted! (Unfortunately I didn't notice that the glue went where it shouldn't have. As a result the front right wheel doesn't turn! It's not for playing with anyway! Toolbox and some rust here and there. Engine fits! Floor Boards. Took them from my Volvo F12 Globetrotter. (I had taken the Volvo apart two weeks ago. Now it's a parts donor!) The cab looks pretty nice. Still have to paint the window seals.
Rockford Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 That's looking really good! You've made rapid progress with this one, there's no holding you back now. Your surface finish looks much better now too. Well done.
Jürgen M. Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 Thanks Rockford! I found out a few features that helped to improve the surface! I did try to make it look a bit old and repainted.
Jürgen M. Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 Just noticed that I completely forgot to take pics of the interior! You can see a bit of it here: Cab without interior located in place. Here it's completed and glued to the chassis. Grille looks pretty good! Now the aircleaner tube to the turbo charger has to be put in place and lotsa small stuff!
Jürgen M. Posted July 11, 2024 Author Posted July 11, 2024 (edited) Thank you Gary. Glad you like it. Printed the bumper over night. I'm undecided wether to leave it black or paint it in steel grey like the grille. I chose this bumper type and turned it around, added a hitch. The transmission is oily and a bit aged. I'll have to do some aging on the cab and the tool box too. Now the small stuff begins! Mirrors, marker lights, head light lenses (both Volvo F12), horn, bumper, air lines, decals, ... ... and whatever's underneath the hood. Lubricator, washing and brake fluid, ... Edited July 11, 2024 by Jürgen M. Forgot a picture!
Rockford Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 It's exhausting just watching this job, I don't know how you maintain the energy! It takes me two years to do one little project and you're bashing out one of kind projects by the minute! You've done really well with this, making the engine cover hinges functional etc...
Jürgen M. Posted July 11, 2024 Author Posted July 11, 2024 I wasn't aware of being so fast. OK, the K123 did find the shelf quicker than expected. Actually wenn the designing is done it goes quickly! A lot of parts can be taken over from previous projects which makes it easier. The time eating part is actually designing a new cab and its interior. There's a lot you can do wrong and printing a cab more than once is a real bummer! Of course if I would insist in creating the same precision and quality you guys deliver I'd take a lot longer too! I admit I don't really take that much time for details! I admire the anticipation all you guys have. It's not mine though. I like seeing the trucks in the shelf once I've finished designing them so I start printing to see how the parts look and if they do what they're supposed to! Then I just can't wait to get it assembled and painted. ? Thanks for your support and positive feedback on my projects! Makes me want to continue! 1
