yes, richard burns and colin mcrae where great drivers! and my fav too but the is also:

paddy hopkirk, i don't think he's dead yet. but he is like 70 or 80 something!( he rallied mini coopers!)

and any rally driver and co-driver of the group b rally class!

those cars where brutal, and blindingly fast! plus extremly dangerous! those cars caused alot of horrific accidents and many deaths, thats why they had banned group b class!

and many more i cant think of right now!

ahhh yes REAL driving talent. Yeah this is hard as most are retired or sadly died. I would have too say pretty much all of them because to do this, it takes a certain type of insanity and talent. Walter Rohl, Hannu Mikkola, Juha Kankkunen, Ari Vatenen, Henri Toinoven, Colin Mcrae, Marian Bublewicz was good, and Finnish drivers, Carlos Sainz, Michelle Mouton, etc. etc. You definetly can't forget the driver in RAC, those were probably more insane than the Group B drivers. Back then all they wore was t shirts and shorts some of them in the Safari rally, just racing belts, no helmet even and to pilot, the Alpine, Stratos, Escort, Manta, Mini, Saab, Datsun, etc. Those were RAW rally cars and real competition. These guys were drifting even before the Japanese knew what it was, on snow/ice and dirt. I just love rally.

stupid fans, way to screw Group B from that time on!

This is what cars were made to do!

yeah befor drifting it was called powersliding!

Question since we all like the same drivers! what about your fav rally cars!

mine would have to be a renault r5 turbo 2 "or" a puegoet 205 t16! those cars are mad! and very rare and expsive!

subbie 22b impreza is very nice and rare! but all 500 made are for road use! sorry to say but that subbie in the video wasn't a 22b.

and the renualt and puegoet was for my mr class (mid-engine rear wheel drive)

now for the 4wd class it would have to be.............

i don't know, subbies are to common! it has to be something old and rare!

and FWD is the champion for ever: the austin mini cooper 1275 s!

I used to be a fan, loved watching it every week...but since they abandoned the US television market (or Speed Channel abandoned it, doesn't matter) I haven't bothered to follow it. It seems the infinite "wisdom" of the FIA have made WRC currently a hollow shell of it's former glory, and a bunch of silly new rules and whatnot. I can't imagine WRC w/o Subaru :D:blink:

I assume Loeb is still one of the better drivers? He was amazing when last we saw WRC televised in the US. He seemed like the Michael Schumacher of WRC, brilliant driving and it was rare for him to ever make a mistake.

I'm sure now I'll hear from all the Loeb haters :P

I got tired of Schumacher...he was too good, F1 became boring/mundane during his reign. Now F1 is just so silly with all the drama/action coming from everywhere but the track on race day

Sad that I used to love both WRC and F1 and the powers-that-be have driven me away from being a fan. What a waste. Oh well, next weekend Road Atlanta hosts the Ferrari Challenge, there will be historic F1 and FXX exhibition races, along w/the official F430 Challenge races. The first weekend in May are the Walter Mitty historic races. To heck w/F1, WRC, the FIA and Speed Channel :P

The WRC has been my favorite for the longest and it really upset me when Speed Vision became Speed Channel and stopped broadcasting the WRC races. I loved watching these awesome "street" cars racing on "public" roads drifting around sharp hair-pin turns in Monte Carlo and racing through the forest in snow, on roads barely wide enough for the cars them selves as their screaming down at over 100 MPH!

I dare ANY Nascar driver to do that! Going in circles is boring, but steering a bullet through holes no bigger than a keyhole, that's TALLENT!

My favorite is when their racing on Tarmac where the cars are lower, and they have the bigger wheels, that's yummy!

Amazing however, that their fastest times is on snow!

As soon as Speed Vision became Speed Channel, it went downhill and I've never watched that channel since then except for the occasional drifting and British Touring car, DTM races.

Heck yeah Bob I totally agree the FIA screws everything over, but shut up, it must be nice to be able to just drive to Road Atlanta! ;):D:P

Mine would probably have to be the Stratos; loud, light, raw, rwd, short, fat, fast, low, and pretty paint scheme. Lancia still has the manufacturer rally and championships records, 10 titles and 73 wins! ^_^ I love the 5 cylinder barbble though, and Group A was sweet, heck I like them all. ;)

I agree with you about the let's see a NA$CAR driver run one....and they don't even play BTCC or DTM anymore!!!

i cant wait for the gumball3000 to do another run in europe! they used to the cannonball here in the states but they outlawed it and then they moved the race to europe and called it the gumball rally! love that race! classics, street tuners, and exotics and custom built cars hash it out to become number one!!!!

that basically sums it up :D

Pug's are just insane, all the street versions were awsome, but were really stripped. ;)

The RS200 was mental, it was a rocket and with Cosworth, you can't get any better.

true, also i like another special street/rally car (better than the pug 205) is the renault r5 turbo 2! A BEAST!!!!!

Yea I agree with all that has been said and there are some good driver today BUT they're all woosie now and the reason is because they drive at that speed in braod daylight let them be a lot braver and like us old guys use to do it same speed at night and no I don't mean 1 hour after dark or 1/2 an hour before daylight I'm talkng about all night at those speeds that how the brave guys did it and I'm one of them. Yes I still watch the WRC and here in Australia the ARC but I would prefer it done at night OK it's not a TV thing but done right it could be, after all they don't show the whole rally now only aprts of it and only the top 3 or 4 drivers wot about the rest of the teams the little guy who get no TV coverage gets no story about how they're doing but struggles on anyway and makes their sponsor proud to shell out the money, bring back real rally driving not this pussy footing around in daylight.

Dingo

Nick, I spent the best part of my rallying years belting about the country side in the dark and loved every minute of it, whether it was the ARC (Australian Rally Championship) or the SARC (South Australian Rally Champs) a state based thing that taught me to drive at 9/10ths and I say that as I always had that 1/10th measure of safety built in if U could call it that. Rallying is in my blood and still is even at nearly 60 yrs old if I could get back out there and rally for fun man I'd do it, even now when I go for drives woth my wife I always pick back road and dirt tracks to have fun on I love it.

Nick this is a model replica of my 70's car below.

I think we may have mentioned all bar a couple of the Group B cars from the 80s. This era seems to stand out far more than any of the cars since the mid 90s. Admittedly, it surprises me that no-one has mentioned the Metro 6R4 or the much-maligned Opel Manta. As a Brit, my first views of rallying were on the BBCs coverage of the RAC Rally and seeing these machines diving between trees in pouring rain was a truly unbelievable sight.

And this is my latest WIP (not the real car, a 1/24 resin  )
