Well….. that was short lived …… as my good friend Brian suggested, go back and double check. …… naw , I got this…….. then I thought yeah , he’s right and good thing I did. When I tried to set the cab down on it’s rear mounts it didn’t do what I wanted ……. Seemed like it was hanging up on what I ‘think’ ( as I can’t see for sure) is the shifting tower and linkage. Try as I might there was no joy ……. Now the thought of tossing it crossed my mind for a fleeting second…… so I pulled the bumper glue joint from the frame , had a good look at what might be the issue…… I was thinking about what Ron said about his cab issues and then much to my chagrin, I actually looked at the instructions.  It suggested that the hinges be ‘adjusted’ ….. when I glued the hinges and bumper to the cab , silly me I actually consulted photos of the real truck …. Not accurate for this build. … so a long winded story shortened up …. I discovered that I ‘think’ there has to be about 10 mm between the bottom of the cab and the top of the bumper to prevent any fouling of engine parts ….. I managed to pry the well glued hinges from the cab and boy I was puckered doing that….. got them off with a little persuasion, love and a few choice words ….. the hinges are now set at 10 mm and lightly glued so I can maybe give it another try tomorrow. If it works I will permanently set the hinges and carry on …….. always some sort of challenge. ….. I am cautiously optimistic ….

I feel your pain! That’s always the most nerve wracking part of a COE build… why most of mine are “placed” and not hinged!

If this doesn’t work mine may be the same. ….and I’m not a real fan of cab overs as it goes anyway as a rule …. This one is a bit different and a homage to my late mom …. And I took my Class 1 drivers test on a 63 Kenworth K 100 250 Cummins 13 speed. Had to parallel park it with a 40ft trailer !  Guess I did ok. Passed and bace bad my Class 1 for 45 years..

Sheesh - glad to hear you were able to disconnect everything for the next go around.

Its been a few years since I messed with these but I did something along this procedure  - I use to take and glue that linkage platform to the bottom of the cab with a bit of canopy glue or white glue. It would allow me to lower the cab and it would have a bit of flex also if it needed to move a bit.  I would then use that as a reference for gluing the platform to the frame location.

Eventually I quit using the weak kit hinges and went to aluminum tubing and mechanics wire !

If you are gonna weather your cab a bit I suggest pastels or the tamiya equivalent like the armor modelers do.

Keep up the good work - I feel I need a tetanus shot from looking at that exhaust - there isn't enough structure to that pipe for the flex pipe to hang on too.

Oh hey I'm in the planning process of building a 1960 KW coe

Thanks Sean. Trust me the pipes don’t look that bad in real life…. 😉😳 and thanks for the tip. I may have to use that. It is a good idea. I think the hinges are ok for as much as I will be lifting the cab and your approach is really one I need to try.

And it was a very puckering moment to remove those hinges and I was really careful. I hope I have the issue solved. If not I will have to ask the experts … thanks for checking in and your comments , I always learn things here…

Don't give up Jeff! You're doing great.

I know the issue as well.

Even when I design everything myself, somewhere along the way you lose sight over each and every spot which might be relevant for functionality later.

The first printed cabover that worked out pretty well was the 352 day cab. But I have to admit I had to replace the shifter three times till I found the right spot. One advantage of opening doors, you can approach from two ends!

Anyway, I can understand your grief over cabovers concerning modelling!

It's gonna be a great build! Keep calm and go on! 👍

So sorry to see the shenanigans with the cab. It's the kind of thing you can't really do much about until you're at that stage and everything you've worked so hard on is in place. I'm sure you'll save the day. Don't let it grind you down.

Jurgen, Steve and Lee. Thanks for the vote of confidence … I re- read Sean’s post and after another try last night, just before I tossed it in to the can ,,,,, I stopped and left it and figure the culprit is the shifting tower is too tall, and will adopt a variation of Sean’s solution. I had forgotten about this particular issue as the last one of these I built was well over 40 years ago, so the plan is to lower the shifting tower and maybe narrow up and shorten the shifting plate a little bit ……… I’m thinking that should hopefully solve the issue…….. that’s my plan as it stands ….

Jeff these always got me when I was younger most of the time I glued into place at the bottom of the interior. Now they have more experience I try to adjust the height and it still doesn’t work sometimes hope you figure this out

Thanks Lee , it is the only thing I can think of and it must be that as the cab sits high on the side by a fairly wide margin. I think if I really bring the tower down no one will know ( other than the whole world who reads this !) and if I ever lift the cab , everything will still be there. It will be on my shelf and in actuality, I’m not likely to lift the cab much anyway. …… 🤔

The Astro and Titan are the same way you have to lower the tower and adjust it right or left. The best fit are the Ertl 4070A and 4070Bs I’ve found out.

Good to know …. Wonder why that is the bug bear of the cab over kits? I built the Ertl kits way back when they first came out and recall the fit and finish was really nice …..

Because Ertl put out better quality of Model kits. But on them old AMT kits that’s how we learned to build and conqueror challenges that makes you a better modeler.

Exactly , it is ‘modelling’ rather than ‘assembling’ …. As frustrating as these things can be , when they are rectified, and all works as it is supposed ton, there is a satisfying feeling, and yes absolutely makes one a much better modeller, challenges are always good. …. Besides ….. it’s just plastic …🤭🤣

I can only agree on that! The 4070A was the kit with the best fit. Everything was straight and the parts were good quality. Even the surface and the thickness of the parts were just great. And you're right. The challenges you learn from are the AMT kits. Still it was really fun to build the Ertl kits!

Really nice job in the tilting issue Jeff! Knew you could do it!

Thanks JM , but it still isn’t fixed… I’m on my third ‘tear down’ I don’t know how much more the hinges will take as they are but I may have gone as far as I can or want to ….. IF this last effort works, I will be a happy boy…… and hopefully it will look ok. ………… to be continued ……..
