modeltrucker Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 what is the best way to dechrome plated parts
Jantrix Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Regular house-hold bleach works just fine. Super Clean and Purple Power, both available at auto section of Walmart (also strips paint nicely) will dechrome in nothing flat.
mountaindewd Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 what is the best way to dechrome plated parts I use Super Clean. It's a concentrated degreaser you can pick up at auto parts store or Walmart. It comes in a purple 1 gallon jug. MAKE SURE YOU USE LATEX GLOVES!! Since it is concentrate, it is not good for your skin. Dries it out real bad and can probably make it peel. It wouldn't hurt to use a mask also 'cause the vapors, much like most chemicals, aren't good for the respiratory system or use it outdoors if you have it open for a prolonged amout of time. Les
Captain Obvious Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 I've had good luck with Purple Power and plain ol' Windex.
MrObsessive Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 I mostly use Easy Off Oven Cleaner (Yellow Can) as it will also take off that annoying lacquer base they use. That base can wreak havoc depending on if you're going to paint the wheels as it can react to other paints unfavorably. As others have said, make sure you wear gloves and in the case of the Easy Off, a respirator wouldn't hurt either.
johnthornhill Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I use Simple Green. Once again I'm here pushing finger nail polish remover. I made a post a few minutes ago about useing polish remover for killing glue, it can also be used for taking crome off, but like I said before you have got to watch this stuff because it WILL eat the part if you don't watch out. Hope this helps.
HGLOVAL Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 I use Fantastik. Let the parts soak for 12 to 24hrs. Wash them in mild soap and water and they're ready. You can reuse the Fantastik, just leave it in a seperate jar. Don't add it to the original bottle. Your wife will kiil you when those little pieces of chrome get on her white countertop.
