Gary Chastain Posted March 24 Posted March 24 I have been debating over my next build and decided I like the Watkins kit the best. Plan: sleeper, updated Cummins engine with intercooler, 5&4 with twin stick shifters, maybe oversized turbo, custom wheels, air ride rear suspension, rear fenders, 12 scale inch stretch, better exhaust , all subject to change. Medium dark blue with a little sparkle, TS-50 Tamiya with lotsa chrome. Mockup below 6
Biggu Posted March 24 Posted March 24 If this is going to be ANYTHING like the Autocar, this will be an epic build ! 2

Gary Chastain Posted March 25 Author Posted March 25 With this truck color (dark mica blue) I wanted blue marker lights for the back of the sleeper, maybe other spots. I had seen one of the guys here posted, using half round colored lens for his custom made lights. After much searching I found some at Hobby Lobby in the scrap booking section. Going to experiment with the 4mm blue lights and making/finding some light backers. Also picked up some aluminum tubing to build more custom exhaust stacks, like the look I get from them and low cost. 2

Thanks Landon, gonna break some rules again on this build, hence the above post. Or it might end up in rather large box of bad ideas😂🤣 1
Gary Chastain Posted March 25 Author Posted March 25 Yup, the blue lights are doable………opps got distracted by some shiny bits😂🤣they are sticky back, easy to attach. Boy, this opens the door for some creativity 2

Brutalform Posted March 25 Posted March 25 Very nice work going on here, Gary. I’m glad the lights are gonna work out for you. Maybe I can pick up a few ideas from your build, for my next one.

I have not used this suspension before, bit of a learning curve, see how it goes. May try to build a fixture to get axle heights and spacing correct. 1

That’s funny. I did actually start to finish up some of my drag cars I had laying around, but then it always happens…. You start dreaming up new things. 1

Gary Chastain Posted March 26 Author Posted March 26 Doing some research this morning on customizing, I have been following this build on Semi Casual (YouTube). It’s clean and simple application of customization. panel added between tanks behind sleeper, place for my blue lights. panel added to close in front of rear fenders wow, this picture puts a whole new meaning to detailing air tanks. Not sure of the defining line between mild custom and a full custom build, but I’m throwing caution to the wind. 2
BK9300 Posted March 26 Posted March 26 Quite the finish on that custom rig in the video - every square inch of the paint looks to have been polished. Wouldn’t want to face that project’s final cost! Lots of good ideas for your build. 1

Gary Chastain Posted March 26 Author Posted March 26 First mock-up, lowered the front of truck about two scale inches, so far. Used slightly narrower front axle from my parts bin to locate the wheels where they should be. 4
Gary Chastain Posted March 26 Author Posted March 26 8 minutes ago, Brutalform said: Man, that rig sits nice. Very cool. Sitting better for sure, will study the way it sits, may want to lower it a bit more or go with this setup. Undecided. Got to get the front height set, then I can set the rear ride height to keep it level. 1
