Gary Chastain Posted August 11 Author Posted August 11 Fitting resin cast flares to the hood and cleaning up. Removed the fake windshield wipers, air horn bosses on the roof, filling non utilized holes and cleaning up molding lines. 3
Gary Chastain Posted August 11 Author Posted August 11 Got the grill cut out and PE grill installed, headlights need a lot of work (don’t fit in fender holes. Looks better that kit grill 4
Gary Chastain Posted August 12 Author Posted August 12 The CTM grill fits the AMT KW 925 grill shell acceptable, spent a lot of time recorrecting the radius and removing the molded in KW emblem, but going with this. Headlights now fitted, and turn signal holes filled. All edges cleaned up and sanded. Grill surround will be painted body color with silver screen insert. Now to find cool turn signals and a place to mount them. 4
BK9300 Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Your photo etch work looks really good, Gary. At first, it seems like a shame to cover it with paint, but the detail seems to pop even a bit more once the paint is on! 1

I saw a 900 done like that and liked the look. It also fits the mild custom vision. I have seen a full custom where the entire grill was painted, just didn’t care for that look. 2
Gary Chastain Posted August 12 Author Posted August 12 Weather is still not worthy of painting yet so on to the interior. I have one set of high back bucket seat from Auslowe again the mild custom vision. I did pick up a PE dash/gage set, so I need to remove all the molded in stuff and check fit. 2
Gary Chastain Posted August 12 Author Posted August 12 One thing about attaching a visor, it makes me have stress, they slip when glueing, gotta scratch paint off and I hate when they slip. This is my second time pinning the visor with .047 pins. This allows me to paint everything separately then add a dab of glue with a toothpick to the holes and just snap the visor on during assembly. I will glue pins to the visor, sand flush, allow pins to only be as long as the cab thickness so to not interfere with glass. 4
Gary Chastain Posted August 13 Author Posted August 13 Finally a day that I can lay some paint down, 4 coats, tomorrow, a light sand then two more coats, then clear. 4
Biggu Posted August 13 Posted August 13 That Mica blue is sure a beautiful color, this is going to be as good as the AC ! You have a knack to put these custom trucks together with a great vision, and, that if in real life , any truck driver would be proud to drive or own. I’m really lookin forward to your updates. 1
Gary Chastain Posted August 17 Author Posted August 17 Paint work complete on headache rack, let these sit for a few days before any handling. 2
BK9300 Posted August 18 Posted August 18 (edited) Another top drawer paint job, Gary! Edited August 18 by BK9300 1
Gary Chastain Posted Saturday at 07:15 PM Author Posted Saturday at 07:15 PM Little update. Got the battery boxes modified per Ron’s advice and chromed. Polished the aluminum exhaust tubes, interior paint (want it to look like brown leather), dash is about ready to apply gage panels. Air canisters are painted, let dry for a few days then paint chrome clamp rings and detail them out. 1
ShakyCraftsman Posted Saturday at 07:18 PM Posted Saturday at 07:18 PM Hey Gary What did you use for the chrome paint on the battery boxes? Ron G 1
Gary Chastain Posted Saturday at 07:22 PM Author Posted Saturday at 07:22 PM Revell chrome paint, I wanted to use my Krylon chrome (ish) paint but my spray nozzle broke and got paint everywhere. I like the Krylon because it is a little more polished aluminum look rather than a bright shiny chrome and secondly it doesn’t finger print so bad. 4 minutes ago, ShakyCraftsman said: Hey Gary What did you use for the chrome paint on the battery boxes? Biggu Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago That paint job is just killer !!! I LOVE what you’re doing with this one ……. What a cool idea and build. …… can’t wait for more 1
Gary Chastain Posted 11 hours ago Author Posted 11 hours ago To correct the hood to cab clearance/fit, I added a .020 shim to the bottom of the rear cab mount, which raised the cab crossmember to .187 thickness. You can also see the mount could not be attached by kit locating holes in the frame (sits slightly forward). 2
Gary Chastain Posted 10 hours ago Author Posted 10 hours ago Another problem I was concerned with was flexing the hood and frame to align the pins behind the grill. After engine cross member, radiator and bumper the frame becomes very rigid. With the removal of the grill center section and addition of PE grill, I was afraid that I might bend or break those parts. I slotted the hinge pin holes leaving them slightly snug as an easy snap fit, but allow hood to rotate open without falling off. So far it works very well. 1
BK9300 Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Good ideas, Gary - got to love those 'problems' - keeps the grey matter active!
