Planned obsolescence , by and large. The average person won't :
- Spend the small fortune to have the dealership replace the expensive bulbs
- Do it themselves (whether that's due to time constraints or not possessing the ability to "dig in")

So, what happens ? Well, when combined with other expensive service requirements / recommendations, it's easier to just dump the vehicle , and buy an new one. Or, just don't operate the vehicle at night (haha).

Old car/truck owner's manuals often include instructions on how to change bulbs and fuses.

New vehicle owner's manuals instruct you to not drink antifreeze.

Just sayin'...

Just watched this last night. Love his channel, and long time subscriber.  These tactics are done to rip people off, and what’s worse if you don’t have an honest mechanic like Eric you’re gonna get ripped off twice.  Bet many a shop will do exactly what Eric did, but still charge full price.  I honestly see more women getting ripped off than men by these type of tactics.

When my sister owned a Mazda Tribute her mechanic at the time said it would cost $85 to change a simple $1 turn signal bulb. So I did it. Had to jack the front end up, take off a front wheel, take off the plastic splash guard, reach in without seeing and change the bulb with one hand. Just insane.
