FujimiLover Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Yesterday when I was working on my 928, I wanted to listen to my music on my computer. So, I turned on Itunes, and my computer started "clicking". This "clicking" is the sound of the hard drive trying to read a broken file. Last time this happened, my Dad suggested defragmenting the hard drive, which I did and it solved the problem. This time, I tried defragmenting, and it didn't work. The computer wanted to check it's hard drive, so I tried that, nothing. It seems whenever I try and do something with Itunes, the computer crashes. Now, the Itunes short-cut on my desktop disapeared! I've tried to remove the software on the computer, and it wouldn't let me, same problem. I tried to "fix" it useing your software install/remove program and same thing! I even went on line to download the latest version, 8.1. Download was successful, but when I tried to load the program, it automatically went to that install/remove fix/remove option and wouldnt' do the job. I do know that my anti-blah, blah, blah software is a few day's out of date due to the fact that it's subscription has run out. Unfortunetly, my Dad is out of town and can't help me purchase the update's. So, I'm wondering is it possible I have a virus that's effected Itunes? Everything else seems to be working just fine! Any suggestions to fixing my Itunes? I'm not about to plug-in my Ipod and ruin it as well and possibly lose all my music, photo's, and movies. I've got over 80 GB's worth of stuff!

Harry P. Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 If your computer has a disk first aid-type utility, use it to check if the hard disk is ok. If it checks out ok, and everything else seems to be running ok, then obviously it's the Itunes software that's messed up. The only real way to fix bad software is to uninstall it from your computer and install it again using the install software.
FujimiLover Posted May 5, 2009 Author Posted May 5, 2009 Hi there. I've updated my anti-virus/spyware blah, blah, blah protection and everything check's out okay. I've defragmented it, ran disk-check, and seemes to be okay, but it still crashes whenever I attempt to do ANYTHING related to Itunes. I've downloaded the latest Itunes software, I've opened up my computers control panel, install/unistall programs folder, tried to have it repair/uninstall Itunes and nothing. The computer itselfe appears to be healthy, no known virus's, of anykind. My Dad and I think it might have a bad spot on the harddrive where Itunes was installed/is located. First few attempts at defragmenting, it crashed. Last attempt it got stuck at 99% completion. I think my hard drive has a bad spot on it and it's effecting Itunes. It maybe that the hard drive is failing, I dont' know. Could be a simple scratch? Whatever the reason is, my Itunes is royally screwed up which really really sucks. Without Itunes, i can't update, download, upgrade, fix, repair, either Ipod or Iphone! So far, I'm lucky that my two devices are still working properly and have been recently updated two weeks ago before problems accured. I just hope they continue to work properly till my Itunes works properly! I don't dare plug in my Ipod and Iphone into my computer till everything is working! What can you do when your computer wont' allow you to repair/uninstall your software?

What can you do when your computer won't allow you to repair/uninstall your software? Just a shot in the dark, but what OS are you running? Also how much memory (RAM) does your computer have? Low memory and/or incompatible OS's can cause iTunes or the like crash or not respond. Have you downloaded the latest security updates from Microsoft for your OS? (I'm assuming your running Windows) It could be when you upgraded your iTunes, you might need to have a newer OS such as Vista with Service Pack 1 for instance. Also your registry might be screwed up in some way..............you might try running a registry repair program (PC Tools Registry Mechanic is a good one). Other than that, I don't know what else to tell you except to make sure your data is backed up somehow and reformat the drive. You'd be basically wiping the disk clean, and reinstalling everything, but you would get your computer back to the way it was. Your computer should tell you if there are any bad sectors on the drive-------has it done this? Hard drives don't always necessarily give a warning when they're about to go........they just go. Just the same as I mentioned above, back up all your data and maybe go get yourself a new hard drive just in case. One more thought-------I can't stress enough how important it is to BACK UP YOUR FILES! Hard disk crashes are common and your case is a classic example when this can be a must! Hope all this helps!
Harry P. Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Given all that scary stuff Mr. O just said, man, am I glad I use Macs and not PCs!!!
Foxer Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) Given all that scary stuff Mr. O just said, man, am I glad I use Macs and not PCs!!! heheh.. I'm just posting to cause trouble... Using a Mac is like building in 1/37th scale.... where's the aftermarket? how many kit options do you see at the hobby shop? where's all the help finding a 14" steel wheel? where's all the options to do thinks the way YOU want to? That being said and cause for a PC-Mac flame war.... It does sound like you may have a bad sector on the hard disk. You should at least run chkdsk to check it. Go to Start.Run and type in "chkdsk to run it. They don't put this proggy in System Tools anymore. There are many utility programs that are faster, better and user friendly at this, but chkdsk is free. Also note, itunes is Mac software.. the first area for concern. Edited May 5, 2009 by Foxer
Jairus Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Geeee, thank's that's alot of help! I dont' have an 8 track! I do have an 8-track and that was funny! Actually, you may need a new hard drive. Happened to me and I managed to store critical files on a mess o'discs before it would no longer fire up the computer. Once the new HD was installed, it took a long time to load all the neat programs I originally had.
MrObsessive Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Hmmm........this is why I LOVE Carbonite! Backs up everything silently for 50 bucks a year........UNLIMITED STORAGE! Suffered a hard disc crash? Once you get the new hard drive in and Windows restored, log on to Carbonite and SHAZAAM!! All your files are back on your hard drive! I've got it on my desktop for sure, I've also got an 8GB thumb drive to transfer files to the laptop when needed. Backups are critical in our digitized world of today.

FujimiLover Posted May 5, 2009 Author Posted May 5, 2009 HI guy's. All of my music that I've ripped from a 6 foot tower's worth of CD's is already backed up on a portable 60GB hard drive as well as a few photo's. What I might lose is my movies that I've ripped from DVD's. I have about 80 GB's worth of stuff that wont' fit the 60 GB port/drive. My OS is Windows XP and I'm useing a very good anti-virus software from called Fix-it and it works very well. My computer is fully clean from the most up to date "diseases". I've already tried to run check-disk but it went to quickly and didn't post any messages. So it may still be a bad spot on the hard drive. Will try again later. I hope that my Dad has a secondary 60GB port/drive that I could copy stuff onto. I'd hate to have to rebuild everything. Fortunetly, all my music CD's are backed up, and Itunes saves your purchased items I beleive? Within Itunes it has a check for purchases which you can download again? Right? I've got multiple songs/movies purchased from Itunes which I dont' want to loose either.

Once you get your computer bugs worked out, here's a suggestion: Buy yourself a nice big external hard drive and back up everything there. Storage space (hard drive size) has grown incredibly, while the price has come down. I just bought a 1 TERRABYTE external hard drive (that's a whole lot of GBs!) for $129! It's about the size of a paperback novel. Cheapest "insurance" you'll ever find!
