PXRR-7 Posted April 3 Posted April 3 Hey, new modeler here and this is my first post. Modelling is a waning market in my country and I don't have enough options for a gloss/metallic primer (due to them simply not being available) specially manufactured for model kits. I've seen from some searching around about plastic crazing... I do have an AK primer (matte). How can I top it with a layer of non-model kit primer (that is first layer is AK, then this) to follow with candy paints? And can non-sandable primer be sanded (I have 600-2000 grit sandpapers). Have a good day, PS
stitchdup Posted April 3 Posted April 3 You should be ok with auto primers on their own. just work slowly and let it build up slow and even. i use only auto primers as hobby sprays are hard to get local. i like the acrylic auto paints as they can be used with tamiya most of the time. I'd use a scrap kit to practise on until you are happy with the results. if it goes bad you can strip it with 99% ipa alcohol fairly quickly 1
Dave G. Posted April 3 Posted April 3 I'll just say that first I'd get a scrap piece, and since it seems you have the AK primer, to prime the piece with that. Let it cure up, then try the auto base color coat right to that and see what you get. It may well be fine. If you're doing candy, then I assume your first color is silver or gold. It may go right to the AK primer. In shooting candy, you just need as much base color as to get everything covered, usually mist coats are fine, as long as the metal flecks are even. 1
