beefheart22 Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I'm going with the BOSS 302 version of this kit, though the Mach 1 version is tempting too... I may just go back any buy the same kit and do that version too. Going with the Yellow. Painted the body using Tamiya TS-34 "Camel Yellow" and have to say I'm pleased with it. Just need to wet sand, spray a thin coat of clear, add decals and then keep spraying coats of clear until I can see my smiling face in the paint... or so that's how it is going to work in my head. Can't wait to get this one started since this is one my favorite cars.
Foxer Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 That paint has the reflections of a well polished job already!!!
beefheart22 Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 That paint has the reflections of a well polished job already!!! Thanks! I did a bit of wet sanding between coats.
beefheart22 Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 (edited) I was at my LHS and got looking at the Tamiya spray rack and I noticed 'Brilliant Orange' TS-56 and it was way closer to Trapper Orange than the Camel Yellow could ever be. So I gave the body a quick wet-sand and srayed it on. Looks way closer to the Grabber Orange that I was looking for. Compared to each other: Camel Yellow previously: Grabber Orange now: Ok, I think my camera is slightly colorblind... to see it in real life, it is a significant difference. martman Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 That is very nice, you have a good touch with the paint. I did a boss 302 last year. Are you also working on a 65 fastback as seen in the box? I am working on a 65 fastback right now with the following mods: 302 boss engine Hood scoop and rear wing from 429 boss kit seats from the mach one kit, custom made roll bar custom MRC wheels Metallic black GM paint.

Thanks! Sounds like you're giving your fastback a bigger set of kiwis... I haven't started mine yet, but I plan to start it sooner than later. I already went out and bought the spray cans to paint it up Mica Red and do the interior "Sand"... hoping it will look similar to an Emberglo/Parchment interior. Edited May 27, 2009 by beefheart22
beefheart22 Posted May 8, 2009 Author Posted May 8, 2009 I was spraying the clear coat the other day and dropped it while still wet so I had to strip it down. What a pain in the caboose! gave it a coat of primer. Needs some sanding, but I expect I'll have the body done by the end of the weekend.
beefheart22 Posted May 19, 2009 Author Posted May 19, 2009 (edited) After stripping down the body (used SOS pads and some drugstore alcohol), I primered the whole thing gray to cover up the traces of paint I couldn't scour or sand off, then sprayed on the white primer over top. Sanded that smooth, misted the TS "Brilliant Orange", wetsanded, coat, sanded, coat, sanded sprayed the trunk semi-gloss black, masked the trunk while I gave the rest several clear coats. Now that's startin' too look like grabber orange. Edited May 22, 2009 by beefheart22

I just screwed up my Boss 429 body i was working on. First of all I made the mistake of painting it with Model master enamil paint which comes out of the can to thick and then it take 6 months to dry. Then soaked in spray nine and removed ###### paint. Then I spilled super glue on the one side putting the mirror on. Sanded it down again and went down too far and now I have sanded the body line off of the door. So I orded a new body from Revell and I will start over again. Did I mention how relaxing this hobby is!!!

"Relaxing" I find too once I start nitpicking too much, or make one major error, things just start going down hill. I took a break between stripping the body and painting it just so I could attack it from a fresh, new angle. If we're on the same page, guys like us are just too stubborn to give up, no matter how bad it gets! I used to use enamels, but since living where I am now, all the hobby shops push the Tamiya spray and acrylics. I haven't looked back since. I find the primer, polish, tape, paint markers... everything just seems to be quality, easy-to-use stuff... it's the price that sucks.
beefheart22 Posted May 22, 2009 Author Posted May 22, 2009 Just finished assembly of the engine. Still needs the decals. After all, a BOSS 302 just ain't legit with out the emblem. The body should be cured enough that I can mask. finish painting the back panels. I missed a part and may have painted a part that should not have been.... Minor details. Can't wait until I get to polish it. I tried experimenting with the headers. Gold and metallic brown with some chrome silver over top.
James Flowers Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 Nice looking paint work. Looking forward to the rest of your build.
martman Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I am going to to try to use the headers from the 289 onto the 302 Boss to transplant into the 65 fastaback. Too many work/yard and kids (coach soccer)things on the go to work at this project seriously. I have 4 kits too work on and no time!!! I am itching top get the Boss 429 done as well. I did a Boss 302 last year so it needs a shelf buddy. Good luck, I sure like your paint job. I just love the grabber ford colors. 2010 mustang grabber blue looks awesome.
beefheart22 Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 Finished the interior, polished the body, laid some decals, started the undercarriage. Not bad for a weekends work. Starting to come together.
beefheart22 Posted June 5, 2009 Author Posted June 5, 2009 Body is just about done, save the spoiler, airdam, window louver, side mirrors... all the stuff that is going ot break off when I'm trying to do finish off the engine compartment and wheel assemblies, grill, panel. Used a Tamiya paint marker. Great tool. And if a guy messes up, just polish it off.
