Scott Eriksen Posted June 1 Posted June 1 I got this GMC General kit laying around.......and it needs an 1801 Holmes! 1
Chariots of Fire Posted June 4 Posted June 4 How about scratch building one?? Get some photos, Holmes info or measurements and go at it!  😎 2
StakerAlloys8 Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Adding on to scratch building one, you can get a parts manual for a 1801 Holmes online for free, finding measurements may be a harder task. Either way this would be a fun build to watch. 1

If it comes down to it I would scratchbuild ,,but some dimensions would be nice ,,,,I went through this with the FDNY and my Autocar wrecker Edited June 4 by Scott Eriksen

Scott Eriksen Posted June 4 Author Posted June 4 The Autocar - Holmes 750 was 3D printed ,I got that on Shapeways ,, but the mast/booms are not quite to scale ,,a bit bigger than 1/24th 1
Scott Eriksen Posted June 4 Author Posted June 4 THE FDNY truck was semi-scratch / kitbash of the Revell kit 1
BK9300 Posted June 4 Posted June 4 (edited) Scott, by chance do you have this brochure? https://zips.com/docs/default-source/new-equipment-brochures/century/holmes/holmes_1801_1981.pdf?sfvrsn=c0f8eb13_4 Do you have any other good photos you might PM me? Â Â Edited June 4 by BK9300 1
Scott Eriksen Posted June 4 Author Posted June 4 Just that same one here's some pics of another 1801 ,,they didn't build a lot of them,,they came out right before the switch to all hydraulic/under reach lifts / rotators  1
BK9300 Posted June 5 Posted June 5 It would be hard to give you accurate measurements without those darn plans. Best a person might do is to scale everything off the height of your General's cab and then work out the measurements off these photos, using the cab height as the benchmark measurement. 2

Brian...yep....I'm still searching for actual dimensional data 2
Chariots of Fire Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Those last photos should be of some help. When you compare the height of the cab to the wrecker frame there is some consistency. If you can find one or two dimensions that are relatively proportional you might be off to a start. Other pieces that you can see in the closeups can be made to fit pretty close. 1

Thats probably what it will come down to if I can't get some prints/mechanical drawings ,I'm on the Holmes Wrecker Facebook group,,,I put the word outÂ
Warren D Posted June 8 Posted June 8 I asked a local wrecker collector this morning when I saw him at an antique truck show. He has 4+ buildings of wreckers but not one with an 1801. He didn't know of anyone in the Northeast with one, as you already know they didn't make many and when they wore out they were scrapped. If someone is going to the big show in Macungie, PA next weekend, maybe they could ask around. I doubt I'll go this year, forecast is calling for rain on Sat (which would make 14 or 15 in a row). 1

Thanks for the help Warren,,, I'm still trying! Maybe I should try and reach out to Jamie Davis Towing! The boom is not too different than the one on the Revell kit I used for the FDNY truck other than the lift cylinder placement,, I could probably try and get another but that's a lot of $$$$ for just a few usable bits  Edited June 8 by Scott Eriksen
Warren D Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Last I had seen, Jamie sold the General a couple of years back, to someone in the USA IIRC. An internet search might reveal who bought it. 1
Warren D Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Found on Wiki under former equipment:  HR 70 "The General" – 1980 GMC, Holmes 1801 (45 Ton), sold June 2021 to Hustler Towing in Olds Alberta 1
