Dragline Posted yesterday at 03:37 PM Posted yesterday at 03:37 PM (edited) I looked for a thread about displaying your builds. And while I am certain there are several, for the life of me I couldn't find one. I have a guest bedroom here in my home. It has the usual amenities, but also has a large display cabinet and an 17th century dresser with lots of space. Space for my builds that is! I have builds complete in boxes if they fit after they are complete. I have boxes in the attic as well. I have seen some of the stashes around here and while my own is respectable, it's nowhere near some of you. That being said, if I have a guest they get treated to quite a few of my recent, and not so recent builds. However, it's usually one of my brothers or friends, so they've seen it all and are not impressed. Edited 11 hours ago by Dragline 4
Beans Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago Nice to see that others have eclectic building tastes. Our guest bedroom used to have the same thing. Then we moved and gained a bedroom. Now the "hobby room" is full and I have started taking a select few builds to the office. 1
Dragline Posted 9 hours ago Author Posted 9 hours ago There was a time when all I built were cars. And that served for years. I forgot how long it has been. But it's been quite a long time, but at some point I saw figure painting and Warhammer. I knew of Warhammer since the 80s, but never played it. I saw a few videos on YouTube and saw exquisite figures and Warhammer done to a very high standard. I was captivated by the possibility of such high art and began watching painting tutorials. After that I was hooked and began buying paint and brushes for miniatures. What's nice is it crosses over to model cars in ways I never expected. Washes are now a big part of my automotive building regimen. I have those pretty girl figures and plan to paint those to pose near my cars also. We car modelers usually don't posses the correct paints to accurately paint figures, so they end up looking kinda funky. Testors gloss enamels and figures don't mix at all. I have seen the results and they are less than stellar. That and the fact that cars are not the only things that hold my interest and here we are with an eclectic mix of builds. 1
Beans Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago We have similar paths. I started with cars. Then went heavy into military models. I started painting military figures with artist oils. Then discovered gaming miniatures. Never played but love all the fantasy and creepy stuff. Ended up building a whole Halloween village full of mini dioramas. It got too big to display so it has been boxed up for a couple years now. I definitely learned different skills that carry over into car modeling. Here is a few of my little beasties that I am going to have to dig out and put on a shelf. 1
Dragline Posted 8 hours ago Author Posted 8 hours ago Those are great! I wouldn't be surprised if many here are closet mini painters. I know that there is a lot military in the "Other Models" section, with talented builders always showing superb builds. Like your beasties here, they open up different skills and are painted quite differently from any car or truck. The only spraying to be done is primer usually. The airbrush plays a part, but I tend to stick with the brush in the more traditional manner. Are those Ral Partha or D&D creatures? The amount available is truly staggering. And eBay is another source of near limitless 3D and cast resin figures for painting. The world of figures is so huge, it dwarfs (no pun) automotive modeling.
Beans Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago Thanks. As I remember I think they are almost all Reaper/Bones miniatures. The Scooby gang was a 3d print I did before I destroyed my printer. I always use brushes for miniatures. I tend to want to brush more and more car parts now because of it. I will usually brush paint interiors almost entirely. Definitely slower but more enjoyable for me. 1
