MarkJ Posted November 13 Author Posted November 13 Sneak peek. This was before the exhaust were painted. all I lack at this moment is one headlight cover which I lost and had to make a new one and the gas cap. After that I shall begin decaling. 7

MarkJ Posted November 13 Author Posted November 13 Started putting the white inlays down so I can use my inkjet decals on the model. I thought I had cleared the sheets but found out quickly when I tried to do a color decal on a white inlay and the ink dissolved in the decal water. It's weird but the white laser decals don't have to be cleared but they are so thin it's a good idea to clear them as well. I had a lot of trouble doing the white inlays before I found out I had not cleared them either. Things should go more smoothly tomorrow. 2
MarkJ Posted November 15 Author Posted November 15 I thought I had put all the white inlays down, but I still have a tiny hm decal that goes on the trunk and looking at these photos reminds me that I haven't finished the wheels yet. When the color decals are layed down the decals will appear much smaller. I breathed a sigh of relief after applying those contingency whites on the front fenders. That was very tedious work, and I did not have much back up decals left if I made a mistake and surely did not want to print anymore sheets. 4
Pierre Rivard Posted November 15 Posted November 15 This build is coming off splendidly Mark. I circled back and read the posts about creating your artwork for decals. Very informative... and lots of work for sure. A beautiful replica of a very special car in the making

A beautiful replica of a very special car in the making Thank you so much, Pierre for stopping by and weighing in on the build. It's been such a long time since I applied these decals that I kind of had to relearn how to do it, so I messed up all of one decal but had just enough to get that decal applied to both sides of the build. I usually have a lot left over so I'm glad I always make extra ones. Ink or in this case whatever laser decals are made of is cheap, but decal paper is not. The color ink jet decals should be a lot easier to apply. I could not find a good aftermarket sheet for this build so I was glad I could create my own. I hope you are still interested in making your own. Its really not that hard once you figure it out. A lot of trial and error goes into it learning the graphics program. Luckily mine is very old and pretty easy to learn.
BK9300 Posted November 15 Posted November 15 Mark, always a tremendous amount of research and design goes into your decaling - quite a process! With your white inlays, do you ever have movement in them when you’re applying coloured decals over top of them, especially if any decal set solution is needed?

Thanks, Brian for your interest in the build. The answer to your question is no. The white inlays are solid as a rock if you do all of them first and wait 24 hours to start doing the color. You just have to make sure you get the color ones lined up on top of the white exactly and you can tell when that happens because the decal suddenly appears clear as a bell when you achieve it instead of looking like you have double vision. It's a little tricky but if you put a little dish washing detergent in the decal water it makes them move easily and it's a good idea to use a toothpick to move the color into place over the white one instead of your finger that can actually have the decal adhere to your finger instead of the surface decal you're trying to get it to adhere to. Thanks again for joining in the discussion. 1
MarkJ Posted November 20 Author Posted November 20 Well, it's completely finished except for what used to be called future. But that only takes about 5 minutes and into the case it goes till I can complete the job of cleaning up my work area which will take forever. I never learned how to keep it from getting completely cluttered which my wip photos will bear out. Then I can turn the table into a photo studio or my lame version of one. Then take the photos, edit them for size and add my logo to the top right corner of every photo. Then on to the much-anticipated next build which won't be Nascar. Oh yeah, I will post the photos in the Nascar showroom or whatever it's called. 1

MarkJ Posted Sunday at 02:45 PM Author Posted Sunday at 02:45 PM Finally finished. It's over in the under-glass section of Nascar. Look at the pictures from a distance and they will look better. The decals are lacking a lot in quality, but I think they are correct for the day of the race. 4
lucky 130 Posted Sunday at 07:46 PM Posted Sunday at 07:46 PM This build is beautiful, and I'm not meaning anything negativity about it, but I do have and have always had a question about Mario Andretti's notoriety. He won Indy once, and One Nascar race even tho it was the Daytona 500. What really makes him so special? I just can't get my head around that. Just wondering.

Michael, actually he is the only driver to win the Daytona 500, The Indy 500 and the formula 1 championship in 1978. That's some pretty good notoriety, His win at the Daytona 500 came in a field filler car with the same engine as his teammate Fred Lorenzen but the car handled terribly. It had a bad push in it that they could not adjust out of it, but his driving skill allowed him to catch and pass Lorenzen. Then on the final pitstop his crew held him in the pits until Lorenzen got out first, but he was able to catch Lorenzen for the win. I actually watched this race live on closed circuit T.V. back in 1967 in downtown Houston at a venue set up like a movie theatre with folding chairs. I was 16 years old at the time and my 19-year-old friend Chuck Clark borrowed his parents 1965 Ford LTD that we rode 25 miles from our homes south of Houston in the tiny city of Seabrook to attend. I did the same thing to watch the Indy 500 in 1966. There was no instant replays and it was black and white television, but it was the only way to see live racing back then. Thank you for your kind words about my build.
lucky 130 Posted Monday at 12:59 PM Posted Monday at 12:59 PM While he did those things, people seem to think he is an icon, he didn't do much else, the F1 championship was not what they call a dominate year. I just dont understand his royal statis. Not in the same league as the Unsers, A J. or even Jimmy Clark. Just sayin. Oh by the way, if team orders were to have Lorenzen win the race and were not complied with, that would have been a big no no.

There are plenty of drivers who I don't think deserve the accolades they received like Jimmy Johnson , Mark Martin and the Busch brothers . Everybody has their own opinions. Thanks again for weighing in on the build.
bytownshaker Posted Monday at 05:25 PM Posted Monday at 05:25 PM Mario had 12 F1 wins including 1 Championship, 52 Indy car wins including 1 Indy 500 and 4 Championships, 1 24 hours of Daytona win and 3 12 hours of Sebring wins plus the 1 Daytona 500 win. I'd say that's a impressive career 2
