Going for out of box, open hood as it looks great open. Green is neat but I’m tempted by a metallic brown, believe it was the minor facelift option colour. Well see!

For the interior I’d like to try an intimidating as it’s so revealing but faithful carpet color of the era a beige-mustardy-brown. None of which are pictured of in stock I have.. yet.

Currently the rear wheel is not absolutely centered in the wheel well ( ocd torture ) .

The four corners are taped in place best I could for now for a mock-up.. faking the offset. Kinda nice with a narrow car and narrow track for a original late 70s/ early 80s car.

Generally I’m still surprised how good kits line up- it’s tiny plastic that’s been in a box for years, sometimes decades with questionable quality control and deviation.

I removed a fair bit of material to get the chassis to mate with the body. The wheelbase is off by a millemeter or two, it’ll be solved as I am liberal with gluing at final assembly to get things to look right overriding mechanical accuracy. I separated the muffler from the rest of the exhaust to make the muffler a more desirable stout angle and position. Before this it was angled downward and awkward, a true pet peeve of mine 😆 for any car!

Sweet! This is one of those Monogram gems that gets overlooked because the tooling was created in the late 1970s and isn't very detailed, but it's a fun build. I think it represents the real car pretty well in the end.

@DJMar I agree It looks really nice, the parts themselves are great. Don’t see many built really. It’s one of my favourites. I couldn’t help also pickup a modern ( I’m guessing ) tooled version.

Yes, that Hasegawa kit is relatively recent (2021 or so). It's much more detailed and better designed, and builds up into a really nice 1st gen RX-7.

Just thinking - could the Hasegawa kit be a starting point for the ‘85 RX 7 SE ??  That’s the Mazda that i haven’t owned that i wish would follow me home some day …

Some supplies arrived. Still thinking the green as it’s a color I’d never use on any build otherwise. Live a little!

I feel the flocking has the right vibe for the subject now too.

My friend put 400,000 miles on a '79. These are cool cars. The green will look good. To avoid bare/light spots in the flocking I use the same color paint as the flocking. I do a section at a time to avoid dry spots. White glue works well, but may leave the underlying color visible(primer or body color).

Nice progress so far. The Monogram RX-7 has really good "bones" for a project that just need finessing to really turn it into a realistic finished model. You can probably already spot the biggest issue of them all which is the fit of the rear hatch and glass. Because it sits so proud, it also shows off its thickness and it's hard to work the illusion back from that.
