loudcherokee Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 I hope this is the right place to put this. I didn't think it would belong in the tips section. I'm trying to figure out how to wire up an MSD ignition box. All the reference photos I can find just show the box, and then a few wires coming out of the box, but they dont show where the wires go. I cant find a picture at the angle I need, so that I can see what is wired to the box. I'm guessing the box replaces the coil? and then wires go to the battery and starter, but that's just a guess, and I dont have enough knowledge of 1:1 cars to know. Thanks, LC
dwc43 Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 You're all wet on that one. I can help you out though since we run MSD on all our race cars. There's several wires, so get ready. Heavy Black ground Heavy Red to Battery Violet and Green wires go to magnetic pick up in the dist. Orange and Black to the coil Small Red to ignition switch You can also use a Green wire from the tach to the terminal on the box labeled tach output that is right beside that bundle of wires that comes out of an msd box. This covers only the MSD 6 boxes such as the 6,6A and so on. It's a little different for the MSD7AL2 that we use or the 8's and digital boxes.

loudcherokee Posted June 21, 2009 Author Posted June 21, 2009 That helps quite a bit guys. Now I just have to find some wire small enough in scale to run these things. So just to be clear, the MSD ignition box does NOT replace the coil? I would still use the coil from the kit, correct? Thanks, LC
dwc43 Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 I'm glad to see they hook them up the same way we do .... LOL!!

Only thing that can replace the coil is a magneto. It is basically a self contained generator and looks like a very large over sized dist.
dwc43 Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 (edited) For wire use Detail Masters DM1030 for 1/24 scale. Took me a minute to find the ones I used, but that's the number on ,my package. Edited June 21, 2009 by dwc43
dwc43 Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Here's a web site for the wires if you don't have a Hobby Town or something like that nearby. http://www.detailmaster.com/Merchant2/merc...ory_Code=DM-IGW

I use the ignition wire offered by www.scaledreams.com for my spark plug wires. I need to source a smaller wire for the MSD box, i think. I have some floral wire that is smaller gauge, but it would need to be painted. past experience shows that when bent, the paint flakes off. Any suggestions for a smaller gauge wire that is already coated in color? LC
dwc43 Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Detail Masters DM1030 That stuff is pretty small compared to the wires used on all of the pre wired dist. I use. IT should work just fine.

tabsscale1 Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Awesome. I'll have to order some and give it a try. Thanks for the tip! LC For wires on boxes andto coils and wire That is generally smaller on other stuff I use the detail master line of the DM1101 to 1108. It is .0075 in diameter

Foxer Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Some of this really small wiring is best done with stripped bare wire painted the color you need. The ignition and Radio Shack wrapping wire is good for modeling these small wires. The wrapping wire is 30ga, .01" diameter which is a quarter in diameter in 1/25 scale. I also use bare wire from transformers I have pulled out of old computer equipment which is about the same gauge. The wire supplied by Detail Master and others matches this size pretty close also. Some multi-strand wire gives up even smaller gauges for the individual strands.
