B_rad88 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 hey everyone, wuz up? well i was working on another model i have, i painted a couple of layers, first was white primer, then chrome silver over that, and a blue as my final color, with clear gloss on it! well, after the paint dried, it was fine, and then i clear glossed it, and after letting it dry, i noticed that the paint is peeling and bubbling on the plastic! (i would take pics, but my camera croaked on me!) what is causing this? it can't be the paint, i used it before and never had this kind of problem! thank you very much everyone for the help! Brandon
Abell82 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 It sounds like you used incompatible paint. Are you sure they are all the same kind? Lacquer vs. Enamel?
B_rad88 Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 It sounds like you used incompatible paint. Are you sure they are all the same kind? Lacquer vs. Enamel? well, the primer, and the silver and the clear is plasti-kote or krylon, and the blue is automotive paint! but i never had a porblem with this combo of paint before!
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 How long did you wait between layers, buddy?
george 53 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Bran, it MAY sound stupid, but did you WASH the body before you painted it? Just like resin kits, plastic molds also use a De-Molding solution to help pull the plastic from the molds. If you don't wash the body first, you MAY be spraying over the mold release, and it may not be allowing the paint to dry,and bond to the plastic. Just a thought, in case you hadn't washed it.
B_rad88 Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 about 30 mins-1hr! the cans say they dry in about 10-15mins, and i test it before the next layer to make sure its dry!
B_rad88 Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 and i did wash them, or at least i think i did!

Just to be safe, I wait about 24hrs between layers, if i'm doing different colours. Not sure what other advice I can give you, buddy.
B_rad88 Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 ok, thank you! well, after i sprayed the clear, and it dried, it seemed like the clear "pulled" that paint of the plastic! thank you very much everyone for your help! Brandon
935k3 Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 The chrome silver is most likely an enamel which you put lacquer over top. You might get lucky sometimes and get away with it. Avoid putting lacquer over enamels.

Avoid putting lacquer over enamels. I have to agree. It's been my experience that most chrome silvers are an enamel paint regardless of brand.
B_rad88 Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 ok, thank you for the info! well, it worked on my 1/64 austin mini cooper van. and when i just painted my 1/20 lambo the same way, the result is it pulled away from the plastic!
BigGary Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 (edited) ok, thank you for the info! well, it worked on my 1/64 austin mini cooper van. and when i just painted my 1/20 lambo the same way, the result is it pulled away from the plastic! Letting the paint dry "completely", like 2-3 days, can't be over emphasized, especially between paint types. Some paints may seem dry on the surface, but are still wet underneath. When you put another type of paint over paint that is not really dry, it will react in some way. I sometimes hate to see a body sitting there, apparently dry, and not work on it, but use self control and you won't regret it. Gary Edited June 30, 2009 by BigGary

Just a stupid thought, but could the die-cast have made the paint stick better than the plastic? And that might be why you had better results with the die-cast model than the plastic model? Just thinking out loud here..........................
