DRAG IMPORTS BUILD OFF

OK.

Let's start by adapting an all aluminum 815 cubic inch dry sump Ford style Boss block to the Ferrari transmission. The short block contains many titanium parts and housings. The aluminum Ford Boss style hemi heads were tweaked by Kasse.

The Ferrari based trans-axle is computer controlled. This has the latest F-1 software which allows gear shifts in 20 milliseconds. It also has launch control which can be turned off. The original six-speeds have been replaced by three-speeds which allows wider, and therefore much stronger gears. It contains a six disc clutch pack which is also controlled by the computer.

The Boss 429 engine came from the AMT '69 Cougar XR-7 street machine.

does a ford focus count as a import ?

i mean, it looks like one

underperforms out of the box like one

and it appeals to the same crowd as one

i know it's not my choice, nor my build, but i do have an opinion lol

1. it looks like a ford.

2. it under-performs like a ford (no offense, ford fans lol)

3. i'm an import tuner kinda crowd and it doesn't appeal to me.

personally i think an import drag build should consist of an import car and engine to be truly an import drag car. if the car has the blue oval on it, it's domestic, no matter how cheesy they made it.

anyways, my mazda vs the ferrari. who.. will.. win...?

Ok guys so after a swim in the purple pond that did it no good due to the amount of glue on this car ( I got it free though). I have primered and started the body work. This is the first time I have "opened" a model kit. I have never done doors let alone that hatch. I also opened the wheel wells a bit and started the roof scoop. here's what i've done:

i used K&S aluminum tube and rod to bend the intake tube at the correct angle so it would be under the hood but near two of the air inlets from the front bumper. To make the filter, i grabbed a spare inner wheel piece, trimmed the "wheel" away and kept the center part that you'd put the axle in. I then hollowed out the inner part of the center part so it would slide over the end of the aluminum tube. i also found that one of the parts trees had a large knob thing on it that's simply used for ejecting the mold. I trimmed that down, then used my #11 blade and scored in some lines around the outer part of the filter to simulate the ridges of a K&N cone filter. I then painted it red and glued on some black mesh from a Tamiya kit to simulate the screen for the filter. The end result of the filter is it looks like a cone filter that simply slides over the intake tube.

As far as the intake tube, in most cases performance builders use aluminum pipe for weight savings as opposed to steel. it was starting to look a little dull, and i thought that it was in need of polishing, so i used the back edge of the #11 blade and lightly scratched it along the length of the tube and got it evenly. it gives a nice shine! I did have to alter the front frame assembly a little to get everything to fit without clearance issues.

Although the build is going slowly, it is getting done.

does anybody have any detailed pictures on a complete nitrous setup?

i just cleaned up the glue on the filter screen - used tamiya smoke and a toothpick, then followed up with a quick dusting of dullcoat to give it the "used" look

Here is an update from me. I am still tearing this apart. I took out the rear seat which affected the way this goes together. I am making the car lighter, I got rid of the stereo and anything I can think of. I also killed off the normal stock fuel tank as I will re-locate a fuel cell. I still have a long way to go. Ok I was looking for some progress pics and realized I'm the last post person but oh well lol here is some pics after heavy body work and I am still not done But it is slowly getting there. I have to say that this is fun as (1) I have never opened a car before and (2) this is my 1st build in this nature. i haven't done much else to the mazda, but i did snag up an integra type R that was released in 04.

it has a TON of parts to choose from! i'm not sure i'll make it a drag car yet, but i miiiiiiiiiiight. gotta take out the diamond stars (not that my mazda can't do it though, hehe)

The Tamiya RX7 R1 kit is pretty nice. It does feature a rotary that can be built up to your likings. Here is the engine from that kit with scratchbuilt turbo, exhaust mani, fuel sys, ignition, pulley sys, etc.

Hi, I used some reference pics of 1:1 for the rotary since this is the first and only one I've done so far. The back of the engine is completely flat because the trans is mostly molded to the Tamiya chassis. Kinda good because you can use any trans you want and install it in a variety of different cars. Here are some addt'l pics of the side of the engine where the plug wires, etc go. I made 2 ignition modules from styrene (painted flat black) and small tubing. You can see them in the pics. Hope this helps. I dont think I could sell the engine because I have so much time in it. On to the pics ...

Hello everyone, just wanted to post some pics of my latest project since my green 510 (built it about 10 years ago) that was posted earlier in this topic. It is a 1970 Toyota Corolla, it is my first attempt of a full scratchbuilt brass tube chassis...not perfect by any means just my first attempt. Thanks ...let me know what you guys thinkwink.gif

Thanks for the comments, the chassis is still pretty rough, need to clean her up. I am currently machining the shocks. I am really sort of a curbside builder but this is going to be my first serious attempt at a super detailed (for me anyways) build. Still haven't decieded on an engine, it will be turbo of course either Skyline or 13b. After seeing Shuckys 13b I am swaying towards that motor, you did an awsome job on that motor bro!!! (and size wise will work better). The rims are slot car rims...Pro-Track, if you go to Ebay or if you have a slot car track in your area that carries accessories you will find them. They are the perfect size for the small imports. Thanks again

Hey Mike....the front and rear tires were given to me by my good buddy Dirk Joseph. The rears ....I'm not sure, the fronts I belive are Pegasus. Now it looks like you too have found the benefit of Pro Track rimswink.gif . The black front rims I show in the pics....came with O rings, the silver ones had a wider lip which I turned down on the lathe and had the Pro Track foam tires. I removed the foam tires and then just took a little off the outside surface with the lathe to remove the glue and residue left by the foam tires. I like the route it seems that you are taking.... AWD drag monster maybe
