FujimiLover Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I know this is a model car forum, but I haven't posted any builds in a long time mostly cause I haven't done any So, I'd thought I'd post this project I'm doing for/with my 9 year old nephew. My nephew Sean is such a big, big aviation buff and he loves Snoopy's little bi-plane which is this 1917's Camel. Most of the airplane will be painted in Tamiya Color XF-67 Nato Green. We did manage to find it in spray form, but unfortunately it's too cold, windy, and snowy to spray paint! And without a spray paint, what are you going to do right? So this will be a hand-painted job. Luckily, at 1:72 scale it's a very small model. Of coarse, being so small, painting the pilot is extremely difficult! The front of the airplane has appears what looks to be like aluminum, so I'll be using BMF for this. Tamiya also makes the best military colors I think!
george 53 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Marc, didja know that kit AND the Fokker Tri-Plane are available in 1/28th scale? They go REAL nice with my WWII Fighters, an you can't tell the scales off cause they LOOK the same. They're smaller, by jus a smidge, but they LOOK good together! Put one with the Jo-Ham 32 Mercedes an they look GOOD together!!
Harry P. Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I just built a Sopwith Camel and a Fokker in 1/32 scale. Very nice scale... not too big to display, but big enough where you can use PE detail parts and really detail them to the max. They have about a 8"-9" wingspan.
FujimiLover Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 Thanks' guys. I got this at the same time/place I got my 1970 Honda Z Coupe and this airplane was only 6-7 bucks which was just the right price for a 9 year old. They did have larger sizes, but they got to be more expensive and I didn't have a lot of cash on hand. Since it's really hard to say NO! to a 9 year old, I went with the cheapest one we could find. I like the small size, but I find painting the figures difficult! At least difficult to get any real detail out of'em.
FujimiLover Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 Updates: Nose cowling done. More of the pilot. Fuselage. The white section will be painted over with a nice light brown, and just in front of the wing gap is where I'll use the BMF foil. I guess these would be the hub-cap's. Not used to building/painting a static display airplane model so I hope Junior will be happy.
beefheart22 Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 (edited) 1/72 fits nicely on a 9-year-old's dresser. Here's a reference pic if you need one! Edited October 23, 2009 by beefheart22
FujimiLover Posted October 25, 2009 Author Posted October 25, 2009 Last update for this thread. My nephew decided to take it home with him when hi Dad showed up last night from his trip to California. So, this thread can be closed and or deleted. But! That means I now have more time to work on my Honda! Yea!
carchub Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Awww I wish this could have gone on longer =(
BigGary Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Awww I wish this could have gone on longer =( Fujilover is lucky. When my son was 5 yrs. old, I had just finished painting a 1/72 Fokker Tri-plane, as in Red Baron, and was ready to start final assembly. When I came home from work my son had assembled my Tri-plane and made it a glue bomb. I decided it was time for model building lessons. The other option was anger, yelling, and frustration. He became a very good modeler who got into armor, mostly, and we stayed on speaking terms through adolescence. We still talk every week. He's 35 now. Gary
